Is this a reasonable itinerary for a short trip to Prague? Anything glaring I am missing or anything I should swap out? I%26#39;m really interested in seeing as much art nouveau art and architecture as I can.
Thanks.

don%26#39;t say where you are staying so we can judge how near you are to things and whether you are nearer to old town or the castle.
difficult to walk around mala strana without going to the castle, but a general bearings walk across the charles bridge to the old town square is always good.
shops are not too good in prague - don%26#39;t set aside an afternoon for this - go in shops you see on your travels.
museum of communism is a waste of time. it was set up by an american - enough said about its genuineness
you say you are interested in architecture and especially art nouveau, but there isn%26#39;t much architecture on your tour. take the metro out to namesti miru and walk around the vinohrady district for a morning or afternoon. more art nouveau and jugendstill architecture there than in the old town
|||
Also if you like art nouveau kind of stuff then plan to go to Obecni Dum for a coffee and cake after you go to Old Town Square (during the morning of day 2 as you have it now) - it%26#39;s close by and pretty %26quot;grand%26quot;.
|||
jon%26#39;s point is very good. you can actually book at the obecni dum bookshop in the ground floor for a tour of the obecni dum building itself. tour lasts an hour and is very interesting
|||
What time do you arrive? Mala Strana isn%26#39;t very big. You might have time for something more.
I found Hradcany to be a much more interesting area for walking that Mala Strana.
The Old New Synagogue takes about five minutes to see. There is really nothing inside. The synagogue not to miss is the Maisel synagogue as it has an excellent museum.
Cut out the shops and go to Charles Bridge. Try to be there at dawn when it is deserted, and at dark for excellent views in all directions.

I am scheduled to arrive around 2:30pm via train on Day One. I am staying in Mala Strana so I thought I would just get some initial bearings before walking myself into the ground but would love a recommendation that I could do for that afternoon/evening.

Walk to Charles Bridge and continue West to the Strahov Monastery. Go to the brewpub for an inexpensive, quality meal. See the Strahov library and spend a few minutes at the overlook. Then consider a walk up Petrin.
Even if you do all of that, you should have time for an evening walk around Mala Strana. I have never been to another city that is as fun (and feels safe) to aimlessly wander like Prague.

question:
%26quot;... I am staying in Mala Strana so I thought I would just get some initial bearings before walking myself into the ground ...%26quot;
answer
%26quot;... Walk to Charles Bridge and continue West to the Strahov Monastery. .... See the Strahov library and spend a few minutes at the overlook. Then consider a walk up Petrin.
Even if you do all of that, you should have time for an evening walk around Mala Strana. ...%26quot;
I tell you what, but unless you were an olympic athlete, I wouldn%26#39;t call a walk up the castle hill, all the way to the top, past the castle, further up to the strahov monastery and then, wait for it, not down, but even further up, all the way up to the top of petrin hill an %26quot;initial bearing walk before walking myself into the ground%26quot;.
most people after they had flown from the US wouldn%26#39;t be able to move in the evening after this, let alone have time for an evening walk around mala strana!
keep the castle for the next day. you can walk round mala strana, across the charles bridge, to the old town square and then perhpas to the foot of wenceslas square as an initial bearing walk. all flat, and you can take from 30 minutes to 5 hours doing this, depending on where you stop off and what you see on the way

Perhaps I am more comfortable with walking than most. With only three days in Prague, physically pushing yourself a bit is worthwhile, and my suggestion is hardly a great distance.
|||
probably about 5 kilometers, the first four all uphill

What about seeing an area of town I wouldn%26#39;t otherwise get a chance to. I had wanted to get out to the Trade Palace but thought it might be too far afield. Would I be able to do that in the afternoon? I arrive by train and assume I will need to spend a little time checking in at the hotel but I hope by 4pm I could be out and about. Is the area near the trade palace a nice area to walk around? If I make it there before they close I%26#39;m just wondering if I can have dinner nearby or if I should return to more of the tourist center.
In the alternative what about more of a locals neighborhood I would not see otherwise in my trip. I feel like I will see a lot of old town and the castle area and mala strana otherwise. If I don%26#39;t make it to the trade palace before closing is there another neighborhood I should visit in the evening that might be nice for a stroll and dinner.
I am a New Yorker so walking is something I am happy to do as an activity itself.
Thanks for all your feedback and thanks for the tip on which Synagogue to visit. Its hard to tell from some of the guidebooks when time is short what would be the most interesting to see in such a short time.
