Hi all
Just booked to go August bank holiday weekend (Sat-Mon), it will be my first visit.
Anyone would like to suggest an itinery of must see/do things?
Any other general hints or tips would be welcome also.
Thanks

I can see there are a lot of experts on here, so some of you must be able to let me have a few tips?

Problem is Prague is a big City and you have given no idea as to your interests.
What would you say If I was new to London and asked you to suggest an Itinary?
the obvious things are ,the Castle area,Charles Bridge ,Old town Square and thew Jewish Quarter.Your idea of must see items might be totally different from other peoples.
Prague is a city where most of the main tourist sites are within a smaller area and most can be reached on foot or by short tram rides from the city center.
Get yourself a good guide book and make a list of the things that take your fancy, then people on the forum can help you find your way around.
Tips, wear good thick soled shoes as the cobbles of Prague can be hard on the feet, avoid the resturants in Old Town Square if you are on a budget, cheaper meals can be found just a few yards off the square.
Climb some of the Towers for some great views,ie St Vitus Tower,Petrin Tower,Powder Tower,Charles Bridge Tower and the wonderful TV tower in Zizkov.

Thank you
I was under the impression that the city was not that big and most sightseeing can be done on foot?
As this is a short weekend trip, I assume I would only be able to take in the main sights.
To help with this is it better to take an organised tour or river tour, I have ordered a guide book and will read through it, but sometimes up to date advice from recent visitors is also useful.
Thanks again

this is what i got up to in Prague last march, but have since visited a couple of months ago,but not done a report yet.
did a few trips out of the city but you won%26#39;t have time for that.
a whole day can be spent at the castle area and there is changing of the guard every hour with a main one at 12.00 noon.
St Vitus Cathedral with its great tower is worth a visit and i like Golden lane with it%26#39;s medievil armoury displays as well as the chance to fire an old fashioned crossbow.St. Georges Crypt is also very nice and concerts are often held there in the late afternoon /early evening.
Charles Bridge links the Old town and New town and is a stunning sight lots going on there with lots of buskers and people selling their wares as well as portrait artists.
The Old Town hall with the astronomical Clock and a great tower (there is a lift to the top) and the nearby Powder tower and the Church of Our Lady of Tyn all worth visiting.

these companies all do walking tours of the city ,but Prague is easy enough to do on your own.
Tray a beer walk?pub tour one night good fun and you will get to try some great beer.
some of these companies offer folk evenings and i have been on a couple which have been great fun and good value for money

this was the one I went to a few months ago but you have to book and an email to them will suffice.I have also been to the Prague experience Folk evening which was very good.
don%26#39;t know what age group or what gender but there are some great bars ,beerhalls and brewery pubs

will list lots of great places many of which are mentioned in my Go List.
Hope this helps.

That is great!!!
Just what I was looking for ( beer tour sounds great) As I said the guide books will have more than we can do in a weekend and I needed to narrow it down.
Thanks very much for you help.

you can do a lot in 3 days. Prague is small(compared to London) and sights are within walking distance.
my suggestion would be to start off at the Charles bridge(Old Town end) and walk over to Little Quarter. check out the church of St Nicholas. then up the hill to the Castle/palace.Visit St. Vitus cathedral(make sure you go up to the bell tower!!!) then a quick tour in the Royal Palace. Then walk over to The Loreto.
back down to charles bridge and over to Old Town Square. Old town Hall and the famous Astronomical Clock and also the Town Hall Tower then the church of Our Lady before Tyn.
Jewish quater might take up almost a whole day if you want to see all the synagoges, the cemetary and the Ceremonial Hall. you can buy a combined ticket for these at the Klausen Synagoge.
have a nice trip!

Thanks for the tips, between these posts I think I know the bits I will concentrate on.
So after a long day walking and viewing, if anyone wants to pass on food and drinking establishment tips they would be welcome. for food would prefer international rather than just local and for drink, music is fine but not to clubby (too old for that lol).
Thanks for the help.

La Bodeguita del Medio, it%26#39;s a cuban restaurant and we had a fantastic meal there. Atmosphere is lively, food is superb, staff attentive and the price is good.

spend one day in the castle area and another looking round the old town. save the third day for looking at things that interest you more closely on the first two days
