Have booked a short break to Krakow in Sept.
Hotel is opposite the railway station. So for a visit to Aushwitz is it best to go by train or to go by bus?
Also have seen mixed reviews about a guide to go around the camp would like to take our time and not be rushed....but would we miss important info if we just bought a guide book there?
Would also like to visit the salt mines, any recommendations how to get there?
It will be our first trip so what shouldn%26#39;t we miss and any good traditional resturants
All recommendations will be very welcome, am really looking forward it..

you really ought to ask your questions on the krakow forum where you will get more local insight from people who have been. you can take the train to auschwitz from krakow, but it takes almost 3 hours and the auschwitz camp (which is nearby the station) is some 2 miles from the birkenau camp, which also needs to be visited. my advice is although it is more expensive, join a tour on a minibus from krakow, and then you get transported to both auschwitz and birkenau. the other advantage this has is that most people are not in the best mood at the end of the looking at both places and it is therefore often easier just to hop in a tour bus and go home than to try to negotiate polish railways.
for the salt mines, again a tour is better. you will find plenty on companies advertising these when you arrive in krakow
