I%26#39;ll be in Prague in almost 2 weeks. I understand that meat, especially pork, is a key ingredient in most food. Though I eat some fish, I am mostly vegetarian and, alas, have recently had to give up all dairy. Does anyone know where I might find fish or vegetarian disheswithout cheese in them?
Also, if I find a place that serves, say, a vegetable with butter on it, how receptive might people be if I ask for no butter (or no shrimp or whatever I can%26#39;t eat that%26#39;s part of the dish)?
Thanks!

Hi
I wish you luck giving up dairy. I%26#39;m lactose intolerant and before I discovered that I could buy lactase I used to go to hell and back finding non dairy in the UK. Mostly I just ate what I shouldn%26#39;t and put up with the painful effects. It%26#39;s in everything unless you are eating something which has just been picked out of the ground.
In Prague, to put it bluntly you don%26#39;t stand a chance. Even if you have margarine instead of butter you will find out that one of the ingrediants is milk, it%26#39;s commonly used with almost all medications and is an addition in about 80%of prepared foods.
Lots of Chinese are lactose intolerant so if you eat proper chinese food, not the tourist variety, then you may be able to find milk free, or if you can find a vegan restaurant, other than that you would be better off staying in an apartment and cooking for yourself.
Giving up dairy food is a big step as it contains so much that we need expecially as you are a vegetarian. I would recomend taking a suppliment, but a penny to a pound if it comes in a capsule then some form of dairy derivative will have been used. I know I have to read all labels.

Radoost FX cafe and restaurant does vegetarian and vegan food. I Even if you don%26#39;t choose a vegan dish they will be receptive to removing butter/milk etc from their meals. It is at Belehradska 120, near to the IP Pavlova tram %26amp; metro stop. I ended up a regular there, even though I eat meat. They are open for brunch at the weekends from around 11am, and open throughout the week for dinner.
Beas is an indian dhaba/canteen type place with 2 branches. They are vegetarian/vegan. You don%26#39;t get a great choice but they good for lunch. They are at Týnská 19 in the old town, and have just opened a new branch on Belehradska 90. Only open until 8pm. www.beas-dhaba.cz.
I%26#39;ve never been, but Lehka Hlava receives good reviews in the local Czech press. Boršov 2, Old Town. /www.lehkahlava.cz
If you get a hotel breakfast, it might be easiest to go to Country Life (organic food store) and get yourself some soya milk and spread. There are several country life stores in town, the easiest to find is Melantrichova 15, near old town square which also has a cafe attached to it. The world %26quot;bio%26quot; is used to mean organic and usually %26quot;bio%26quot; stores carry soya milk etc.
The dry %26quot;rohlik%26quot; bread does not have any fat in it and is suitable for vegans and will feature on any hotel buffet breakfast (here%26#39;s picture of what I mean http://www.inpeko.cz/galerie/p_rohlik.jpg).

try also the albio bio restaurant on truhlarska street just east of the old town

For truly fantastic and reasonably priced vegetarian food. I%26#39;d head to Lehká Hlava (Clear Head) in Boršov 2, Praha 1 (+420/222 220 665). open from 11:30 - 24:00!
It%26#39;s such a beautiful, chilled out environment to eat at. They speak English, if you%26#39;re worried about your Czech-speaking capabilites. You won%26#39;t want to leave and they provide veggie meals from all over the world and it%26#39;s not too far away from the Charles Bridge.
Here%26#39;s the website: www.lehkahlava.cz

Seriously, go to the website and check out the %26quot;Galerie%26quot;.
I do believe they also provide some vegan options too.

Oh and definately check out Radost, like ThirdPenguin recommended. It%26#39;s fantastic, especially for Sunday Brunch!
