going to prague for a week in the end of Dec - was thinking of to half my stay in Prague and go down to Vienna - good idea? is there a good train service between them?

Vienna is easily reachable by direct train from Prague in 4.5 hours and is a good place to combine a visit with

The train service is about 4.5 hours one way. Buy your tickets from the Czech travel office after you get to Prague. It%26#39;s located next to the Marriott hotel on the other side of old town square. The cost is about 50% of that charged on the internet sites for second class reserved seats. We took a Czech based train to Vienna and a Euro City on the return. The Euro City is a newer and much more comfortable train. It departs from Vienna at around 11:00 a.m. Not sure when it leaves from Prague for Vienna. The local train departs from Prague at around 9:00 a.m.

the czech travel office next to the marriott is the city centre office of czech railways. they sell tickets at the same price as at the station. occasionally they do have special offers, but one cannot say now what special offers there will be in october.
the internet sites referred to by dklaw are sites like www.eurail.com which sell rail tickets two or three times more than the normal price of the ticket locally, so that is where your 50% discount is, but it is not really a discount
buy your ticket at least the day before (only on holidays the trains are full). for the fast pendolino trains you need to reserve a seat in advance

Hi, you can checked the OBB website for the train schedule. Just came back from Prague + Vienna + Budapest; paid 1691 czech crowns (58.50 euro) for a ticket from Prague to Budapest with stopover in Vienna. It will cost an extra 7 euro to reserve a seat. I buy the ticket at the train station in Prague.

www.idos.cz (click on the union jack at the bottom right hand corner of the page to get the english version) is an easier site to navigate than www.oebb.at you cannot though book tickets on internet via idos
