Tours of Prague Castle

We will be in prague in December and as part of the visit would love to visit Prague caslte, after doing a bit of reading up on prague castle and surrounding places of interest it seems to me the sort of place i am not going to know where to start and also what im looking at half the time without being told. Are there companies that offer tours of the %26quot;complex%26quot; or is it possible to get a private tour guide?

Many thanks in advance for your help

Plenty of tour companies offer tours of the lesser town and the castle. You%26#39;ll find their leaflets in the hotel with information on where to meet them and prices. You pay the guide when you join the tour, usually it%26#39;s a bigger group, guess a tour would be around 300 CzK each.

If you wanna prebook a privat guide, check out http://www.guide-prague.cz/guides/eng as mentioned here somewhere befor. A friend of mine works for them too, Caspar Ono Lammers. He%26#39;s a fond of information about Prague...

I have also been reading about some kind of ghost tour thats meets in the old town square can anyone shed any light on that, is it worth it?

never been on one but for the price i think it could be fun

This is my very personal advice, if you can afford it, go for a personal guide, just for half a day, to explore the castle and the lesser town.

They give you not only the historical details, but also the personal insight, i.e. things you might like to know about communism and live during the time. (My favourite is Dr. Helena Matejicek, guide@matejicek.com. )

Or, if you like to see for example the Strahov Monastery for the inside - not just through the open door pushed by 50 other tourists, your private guide can arrange that (for a surcharge of course, but nothing big).

Hi Rose,

Martina is right if you can afford to pay, but also available to hire at the Castle are audio guides, where you hire a headset and get a commentary. This gives you a bit of independence about the pace you go (you can stop for a mulled wine when you want to warm up) as opposed to being in a bigger guide led group, plus of course you know all the major places are covered.

Thanks for your advice, I may try the private guide option as i can not stand the idea of being in a huge tour group and also have never been a fan of audio guides, whilst in rome earlier this year we managed to find a tour company that only ran groups of 6 which was really easy and personall.

roseoakhil,

We are going back to Rome next year and would like to take a small tour.

Can you give me the contact info for the one you used for 5 people in Rome?

you don%26#39;t actually need any guide to visit prague castle. the castle complex itself is a public space so is free to wonder around. only specific buildings and the golden lane (before 6pm) you need to pay for. the ticket for seeing everything at prague castle costs 350 crowns - less money for specific parts. you can see all the builidngs by yourself without a guide, or you can hire a guide at the castle when you arrive. I would personally hire a guide from the castle if you do wish to have a private guide, as they will invariably know more than a guide from a general company and they may be able to take you to some places which are off the path for normal tourists

peb7,

Thanks for the recommendation..

We visited Prague Castle last year without a guide. The complex is so large and well preserved I would like to go back with someone to relate the history and the buildings. I could spend days just touring the Castle area in Prague not to mention the Monastery complex...they are beautiful.

The problem with guides is availability. We visited the Borghese this spring and were to meet our guide at the Museum. When we arrived we learned our Guide was ill that day and there was no one else available to take her place. I would hate to have this happen in Prague and want to make sure it doesn%26#39;t.
