Prague to Budapest by train: Can I make stops along the way?

I am planning to travel from Prague to Budapest by train and want to make stops along the way for one or two days in Vienna, Bratislava, Gyor, before arriving in Budapest.

If I buy a one way ticket, how many days do I get to travel before I need to arrive in Budapest?

I did something like this year ago traveling from Amsterdam to Frankfurt, and it saved lot of money instead of buying point to point tickets for each stop..

Or do I need to buy separate tickets for each sector?

(None of the train websites have repsonded to my inquiries.)

Appreciate any info.

Thanks.

generally with an standard open return ticket or a standard single ticket, you can make stops on the way, although I am talking here about czech and slovak railways - cannot speak for austrian or hungarian railways . not sure of how long the ticket is valid till, but one month springs to mind. on cheap offers, you often need to go on certain days or the day the ticket was issued, so watch out if you buy a cheaper ticket

however, if you want to go to vienna, you should be aware that the prague to budapest line does not pass through vienna - it goes through bratislava and gyor (why gyor - there are far more interesting places along the route). bratislava is also not on the vienna to budapest line.

if you want to go to vienna, you will at least need a separate prague to vienna ticket and a vienna to budapest ticket, orpossibly a separate ticket from vienna to bratislava and a ticket from bratislava to budapest - so if you go to so many places, you may well end up needing a ticket for each journey you take
