Nice restaurant for a 30th Birthday meal

My husband and I are going to Prague in September for 2 days to celebrate his 30th birthday. We are staying at the Icon Hotel. Can anyone suggest a nice restaurant for this occasion. I have read the reviews on Trip Advisor and am torn between Kampa, Mlynec, Bellevue or Palffy Palace.

all are good. kampa has the direct river views (as does mlynec and bellevue, but the view is not so good); however you need to book one. palffy is underneath the castle and has a terrace which just looks at the castle, or you can sit in a historic room. Food wise, another prague expert, brewsta is more of an expert on food than I, but I would say that bellevue has the best food of the four you have chosen.

however saying that, mrs peb always insists on going to palffy for her birthday as she finds it the most romantic. restaurant in prague, and staying at the icon, you can walk back across the charles bridge afterwards if you do go there, beware of the aperitif%26#39;s and appetisers presented to you off the menu - you don%26#39;t find out the (expensive) price until you receive the bill.

I read great things about www.restaurant-david.cz (at their website and www.travel.yahoo.com ). For views the roof terrace of Hotel Aria (in the same street next to American embassy) would be fabulous.

I stayed there.

the david restaurant website would say great things about themselves.

David is a decent enough restaurant, and restaurant choices are personal. I personally don%26#39;t think it is worth the price and the food is cooked very heavy as compared to the light fare of kampa, bellevue and the like. it also doesn%26#39;t have the wow effect for a birthday celebration

I haven%26#39;t been to Bellevue in a very long time, so I can%26#39;t say anything about that.

A seat by the window at Mlynec has a great view of the Charles Bridge, a bit closer than Kampa Park.

For my tastes, I actually liked the food better at Mlynec than Kampa. Kampa was just a little to frou-frou for me. It is supposed to be ultra-sophisticated cooking, but their seared tuna was really no better or much different than anyone else%26#39;s. Quite plain, actually. Plus it had to be sent back because it was not even close to cooked as requested.

The portions were smaller and certainly cost more. Considering the expense, I expect to get some %26quot;wows%26quot; from the food and I really didn%26#39;t. It was good, but I just didn%26#39;t feel the big value for big money.

The bridge view is a %26quot;wow,%26quot; but since I live here, I don%26#39;t want to pay that much extra for it. I%26#39;d recommend it to tourists though, since that scenery and romance factor would be worth more for them. Sitting right on the water at Kampa does give it an edge on atmosphere.

At Mlynec, I just loved their lamb, ruccola, and sun-dried tomato salad. It%26#39;s still on the menu. I%26#39;ve had it a couple of times.

I also had their tiger prawns with caramalized soy sauce and roasted Thai vegetables. It has gotten pricier since I went. It is 745 CZK and in dollar terms, that dish now works out to around $37 but it is their most expensive item.

But almost all of Kampa Park%26#39;s main courses are now around 900 CZK ($44). Basically, I liked the cheaper, tastier prawns more than the tuna dish and I had a view at both.

I can only comment on Mlynec as I haven%26#39;t been to the others, but it was lovely. The food was fantastic and the service was excellent. I too toyed with the idea of going to Kampa but not everything on the menu appealed to me.

We had the Czech menu at Mlynec which began with a really hearty soup, then a wonderful duck course, finishing with a strudel type dessert. I couldn%26#39;t fault the menu at all.

just to point out - mlynec and bellevue are run by the same people, so what you get in one is pretty much interchangeable. mylnec is down by the river where in the winter, some tables (you can book these) have a view of the charles bridge (and the tacky pizza restaurant next door). bellevue is over the road, where in winter only two or three tables (again you can book them) at the front of the street have a view of the castle.

Kampa park is the castle side of the river - the enclosed riverside terrace has over 20 tables with direct riverside views (book the riverside edge tables, rather than the table row behind).

the general consensus amongst locals is that the food in bellevue and mlynec is more genuine than in kampa, but as brewsta points out, for a visitor, kampa does have a real wow factor
