Special entertainment for birthday

Hi I am going to Prague for my 50th (ouch!) birthday from 3-6th August. My birthday is Sat 4th. I want to be entertained somewhere nice or go for folk-type entertainment away from the stag parties! Can anyone recommend anything? We are staying at the Jalta hotel in Wenceslas Square. Also can anyone recomment a taxi firm to collect us from the airport on the 3rd? Thanks for any help!

Hi I have already booked the airport shuttle you recommended! My son went to Prague in April and said he never thought he would get to the airport alive in the taxi he took!!! Do you think I would have to book the folk night? I don%26#39;t ususally do %26quot;city breaks%26quot; at the weekends, do you think it will be really busy as we are staying in Wenceslas Square? I read your %26quot;go log%26quot; and it made very interesting reading!! I am so looking forward to this trip!

For very good food and live Cuban music, you could try La Bodeguita Del Medio at Kaprova 5. Great mojitos. Should be booked ahead.

Hi I have looked up the site and it looks really good! As you are a local, I wonder if you could help? I am staying at the Jalta Hotel and am now a bit worried about it%26#39;s locality! All I wanted was a good hotel, fairly central and easy to walk everywhere. Is it in a decent part of Wenceslas Square? I would appreciate your advice! thanks for your help so far!

Happy birthday first of all.

Secondly , if you can afford a pricey hotel like the Jalta then I would advise you to look into staying at www.aria.cz instead (the number 7 here). A small hotel with music themed rooms, music library, movie library, internet PC , DVD/CD player in the room and if you can stay in one of the rooms with garden view (like Tchaikowski room, or Bach Suite) you have a wonderful time. It%26#39;s in Mala Strana not far from the Charles Bridge and very quiet, next to the American embassy. The garden can be accessed by your room key but otherwise it can be visited as a tourist (for an entrance fee during opening hours) and when you see it you%26#39;d agree that staying in that hotel is a real bonus. The breakfast is best I ever had.

The fact that music can be played in the rooms (CD /DVD) on hightech equipment means of course that they have made sure that you won%26#39;t hear your neighbours.

Another great hotel for a similar price but huge rooms is www.pachtuvpalace.com but I read they have rooms without airco, which is not good in summer of course. The Aria had very quiet controllable airco, quite great.

Hi thanks for your response! Do you not think the Jalta is in the right location then? We got a really good deal and it does look very nice. I don%26#39;t know if I can cancel it as it was booked thru lastminute.com! Do you have any comments about Wenceslas Square?

|||

Wenceslas Square is not the most peaceful location. It has a lot of foot traffic, and there are touts for strip bars on the corners. It%26#39;s not dangerous, just a bit more gritty. The Jalta just got scaffolding across the front for some kind of renovation.

Hotels like Aria, if you can afford it,or big places like Marriott, Renaissance, or Intercontinental have better locations.

Oh, and beware of pickpockets everywhere, especially public transport and crowded tourist areas. There are a few teams working around, and are good with distractions, so if you carry valuables or documents, make sure they are very inaccessable.

|||

Thanks for your reply! Do you see any building work going on at the Jalta? Also, I suppose it is like most big cities really. I know when I am in Oxford Street in London I watch my bag and am very careful when out and about! Going back to the folk entertainment - there seems to be 2 main venues - which is the best and also how far away are they from where I am staying? Thanks again for all your help!

Hi

We had a fantastic evening at U Kalicha, there are traditional Czech musicians wandering among the tables and they serve traditional Czech food. Haven%26#39;t a clue how much it cost because we were so merry by the end of the evening we didn%26#39;t really care.

Booking is essential, I think we did it through Prague Experience but I%26#39;m not sure.

Have a good birthday and if your partner would like to send me a private message then I will also give them a few ideas on birthday suprises.

Jackie
