Dining Out In Prague - Where we ate

We enjoyed some excellent meals during our recent (February, 2007) 7 day trip to Prague, with only one bad experience. First the good.

Sherwood%26#39;s Restaurant, Opletova 19 (right across from the Falkensteiner Hotel Maria Prague). This restaurant was so good that we ate dinner here 4 times. The prices were extremely reasonable. There is an open kitchen, so you can watch your food being cooked. We had the pork knee twice, it was only about $8.00, and you just have to try it. It is this huge slab of roasted pork with the skin, served hanging on a large skewer, and comes with bread. It is almost two pounds of meat, you really don%26#39;t need anything else with it. We also had venison here (about $12), and that was very good, spareribs, also delicious. We ordered a few side dishes that were excellent, the roasted eggplant and squash, in particular (about $1.80). Their salads were interesting and fresh (less than $1.00), and you simply have to try the chocolate dessert crepe, a huge crepe served with vanilla sauce, strawberries and goosberries. With coffee and tea, drinks, appetizers, and a full meal, our bill never came to more than $31.00. This is a nice restaurant, not too fancy, with a mix of locals and tourists. One of the waiters did tack on a 10% %26quot;service charge%26quot; bu we were ok with that because he really worked hard (only two waiters for the entire restaurant) and in actuality it only comes to about 48 cents in US dollars. One time the restaurant did charge us for the bread they put on the table (which was also less than 50 cents - but the bread was good and delicious). The other times we said %26quot;no bread%26quot; and there was no charge. We did not get hit up with any %26quot;cover charge%26quot; or any other kind of tax. We were well pleased with this restaurant and would definitely recommend it.

We also ate at Lemon Leaf, Myslikova 14, which is a Thai style restaurant. Their prices were extremely reasonable, the food was very good. Again, they did not tack on any kind of additional charges on the bill. Their Tom Kha soup is excellent.

While in Josefov we had a quick lunch at Antalya Fast Food, this little restaurant is right next to the Portuguese Synagogue, and is a Lebanese restaurant. We had great falafels for 50 Koruna.

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid The Khajuraho Indian Restaurant in the basement of The Golden Gate Hotel at Michalska 19. This place was a rip off. There is a separate %26quot;English%26quot; menu, which should have tipped us off. Every single thing was %26quot;extra%26quot;. I got what was supposed to be a succulent lamb dish in some kind of sauce (450 koruna). Actually they substituted mutton for the lamb, six chewy pieces at almost $45). My husband got what was supposed to be fresh fish in cooked in tandoori, they were frozen fish patties. We should have walked out as we saw two other couples that came in after us. The samosas were mostly soggy dough, the chai tea had an off-taste. The waiter came and said we should have rice with the meal, but the rice was also 450 koruna, as much as the lamb, and we felt ripped off enough as it was. The waiters come and try to take your plates away before you are done eating, and I ended up having to eat holding onto my water glass (also extra) so he would not grab for it. We both had the lentil soup, and both my husband and I felt ill as we began our walk back to the hotel, an unpleasant couple of hours then ensued. If you get a taste for Indian food, sit in a corner somewhere until the urge passes, do not go to this restaurant!!!

All in all though, we loved the food in Prague. We also stopped at a little coffee/pastry shop a few blocks up on Opletova (don%26#39;t remember the name) and had a nice coffee and tea there, along with some delicious home made pastries. This was the only place where the server spoke no English at all, but with a few smiles, a few shrugs, and hand gestures, she finally invited me behind the counter so I could pick out what tea I wanted to have. No problems.

One more thing about The Khajuraho Indian Restaurant. With all the extras, our meal came to almost $135.00. I rarely spend that kind of money eating in a restaurant in the United States, paying that much here for such horrible food was just outrageous.

khajuraho restaurant is a rip off. We could have told you so. See the local press review which says the same thing:

Indian, Thai, lebanese food. What was wrong with Czech food?

|||

Are you kidding? Nothing was wrong with Czech food. After two meals of pork knee, and dumplings, we wanted to try something a little lighter. Here in the US we live in the middle of nowhere, so we can%26#39;t get Lebanese, Thai, Indian or Czech food. We wanted to try a little of each, but enjoyed our Czech style meals at Sherwood%26#39;s most of all.

|||

there%26#39;s a lot more to czech cuisine that pork cabbage and dumplings

|||

Why the hostile answer, Peb? I am just giving my personal experiences. They may not match yours, and you may not agree with what I am saying. Of course there is more to Czech food than what we ate. I was simply reporting on our dining experiences in your city.

if people want a decent indian restaurant, go to Taj Mahal on Skretova street just behind the Muzeum

|||

Just wondering whether you were at the same restaurant Khajuraho as we were!!!! Having eaten Indian food all over the world, this is really a highlight! Superb food and excellent service, different from England but definitely better :-))) Experience worth repeating. Lovely people. Highly recommendable!

food at khajuraho isn%26#39;t bad. it is just that they charge top uk prices for it, which in prague, for those not used to uk prices, is a complete rip off
