Racism in Prague

I have booked a trip to Prague for January but recently I have heard some very disturbing reports of racism towards non-whites in the city. I know racism is everywhere but what disturbs me was learning that a white female had tried to visit a restaurant with her black girlfriend and both were refused because of the black friend. Is this true that there are places that do not allow people because of their skin colour?

I have never heard or experienced anything like that in Prague. Ridiculous! Prague is such a melting pot, that%26#39;s half the fun of living here for me.

can you say where you learned of the incident? Never heard of anything like that except towards local romanies (and such a thing doesn%26#39;t happen in the tourist centre). Are you sure that the people weren%26#39;t just refused entry because they were foreigners on a stag party / drinking binge?

People are sometimes cold of foriegners, but you will receive a much warmer welcome here, whatever your colour, than you recieve from the wonderful US immigration authoirities

Sorry to get back to you so late. I was not alerted of your responses. Anyways a friend of mine had told me to be careful of travelling in Prague as there was an incident a time ago that she learned from a student of hers who was travelling there with a friend who was black. Of course I will still be travelling there but was just concerned. This friend even tried to warn me against going concerning some illegal human trafficking trade thing in Eastern Europe. I know to stay out of places that are considered dodgy and besides I will be with my boyfriend who has visited Prague before and tells me it%26#39;s a great city to visit. Thanks.

Hello. I am a black man from New York City and I have been to Prague twice. No matter where you go, you will run into the racist bull---- but not as bad as in the US. Me and three black, male friends were denied entry once to a club in Copenhagen, Denmark. Otherwise, the city was awesome and the people very nice.

People stared at us like we were Martians when we were in Switzerland but they just weren%26#39;t used to the site. For the most part, they were very nice. Same with Germany, Iceland, Sweden and other countries.

In Prague, the people were generally very cool. Most have seen black people in their city, mostly Africans, but it is still not an overly familiar site to most Czechs. I was there earlier this year and still had people staring. Mostly because they aren%26#39;t used to blacks but most of the people were fine. And they loved the fact that I tried to speak the language. They smiled and spoke back to me when I asked them if they spoke English (in Czech). Or if I said hello or good-bye (Ciao!!) or most other things I tried, in Czech.

People will stare but not because they are being narrow-minded or racist. Mostly because they don%26#39;t see blacks alot. Though many are reserved, stern or even sometimes aloof, I found them generally more accepting and polite than folks in the US.

Oh yes racism is everywhere. I live here in Atlanta and it amazes me still that you can go into certain places and be stared at because you%26#39;re black.; and I%26#39;m thinking this is Atlanta, there are lots of black people here. What do they expect? ! Anyways I am planning and hoping to have a good time regardless of stares. I understand that some people do not mean anything by it.

Staring (though commnly accepted as rude), is not always a negative thing. I have been guilty of looking at some black men for a while (otherwise known as staring) because I have been totoally blown away by how gorgeous they are. I of course try not to do that, but sometimes its not that easy LOL

Being refused entry on the basis of colour is shocking anywhere in the world in this day and age. It sounds like Praque is just fine. As always one or a few minor incidents with idiots should not be mistaken for representing the majority. Have a great time. I hope to follow in your footsteps in the next 12 - 24 months.

Very true. I found most of the staring in Czech Republic was just out of unfamiliarity, not out of disdain or mean-spiritedness.

I am sorry to say that my Egyptian son-in-law was recently attacked late night in the metro after work by three skin heads, I am afraid it is a problem here sometimes. Mostly Czechs are not used to seeing black people thus they are curious, When I first moved here 15 years ago there were only 4 black people in Prague, all English teachers,...
