Judging from recent posts, it seems like a lot you Prague regulars prefer to stay in apartments versus hotels. We%26#39;ve gone the guest room/b%26amp;b route in European cities before . . . but never apartment. Can someone give me the ins and outs for apartments in Prague:
Is it more cost-effective?
Are the accommodations nicer than what you%26#39;d get in a hotel of similar price?
Do you just get more personal service?
Are there downsides?

bed and breakfasts as in the US are very rare here in prague. these equate to small three star hotels, where you have your own room and facilities and a (small) breakfast. guest rooms do exist, but they are out in the suburbs and the time to travel into the centre probably do not make them worthwhile.
It is very difficult to answer your question on the basis that you don%26#39;t give much idea of cost or facility information. There are apartments which are cheap. there are apartments in prague which are very expensive - the same goes for hotels. In apartments you get very little service - in some you even have to go somewhere else to pick up the keys. in the main you need to cook for yourself, clean and make your own beds during your stay. you can of course have serviced apartments, but these cost more.
where apartments come into their own is where you have a family - your small kids can make as much noise in the apartment as they want and you have more flexibility - In addition, an apartment is generally cheaper than paying for two hotel rooms, especially if your room rate does not include breakfast. Apartments are cheaper if you are staying for a longer period of time
if however, there are only two of you, the price difference may not be too great and you don%26#39;t have any worries in a hotel, like finding your own breakfast

I%26#39;ll expand on our needs.
There will be just two of us. We were originally looking for a nice hostel/budget hotel. From initial research, I%26#39;m guessing that would put us in the range of $75-100/night USD for two people. (50-75 Eur).
Basic is OK, but it has to be very clean and must have a private bathroom. We%26#39;d greatly prefer to walk to as many sights as possible.

miss sophies hostel www.miss-sophies.com has good reviews on this site, is very near a tram station which can take you to the centre and the castle area and has separate rooms with ensuite facilities
if you are after things being spotless in prague, beware, the streets are quite dirty

not worried about dirty streets - we%26#39;re not expecting (and wouldn%26#39;t want) Disneyland. Just worried about dirty hotel/hostel bathrooms.
So Peb, per my original question, you think a hostel/hotel is a better route for two people than an apartment?

I would go for a hotel for 2 people, purely out of convenience. many cheaper hotels are very basic and would not fit your criteria, but miss-sophies has a reputation of being clean (whether spotlessly clean is a different matter)
