Need help finding rental car agencies that allow one way international rentals. I%26#39;ll be flying into Frankfurt and making my way to Munich (many stops along the way). From Munich, I plan to head to Salzburg for a day or so. Then head on up to Prague where I will return the car. If at all possible, I%26#39;d prefer to only have to rent the one car and not rent a car for Germany, rent a separate car for Austria, and then rent a 3rd car to get to Prague.
1. Is this feasible?
2. What rental car companies allow this?
3. If allowed, what type of fees are involved?
Unrelated question, is GPS/Navigation available for rental in non-luxury vehicles?

fwiw, the trip is planned for November.

easily possible with all the major rental companies such as hertz, avis, alamo, budget, etc. but you will need to pay a drop off fee (which is essentially the cost of a person in frankfurt coming to prague and then driving the car all the way back to frankfurt, so it will not be cheap).
It will almost certainly be cheaper for you to drop the car off in munich and then either catch the train or bus to prague than it will be to drop the car off in salzburg or prague (salzburg is a little over an hour%26#39;s drive from munich). it may even be cheaper to have a czech private driver pick you up in munich and take you to prague than to drop the car off in prague.
GPS is often not standard and is only generally good for the country you hire the car in - for example, if you hire the car in germany, it is probable that the GPS will not be very accurate in the czech republic and may not cover the czech republic at all

Great info.
Looks like we%26#39;ll most certainly be taking the train from Munich to Salzburg. What%26#39;s the easiest / cheapest / fastest way to get from Salzburg to Prague?
|||
there is a direct train from salzburg to prague but it goes in the night. there is a day train leaving salzburg at 15.34 and arriving prague at 21.40, where the only change necessary is at linz. other journeys require more than one change

Should I be looking at bahn.de for trains from Salzburg to Prague? Or should I be looking at a different train service?
I%26#39;m guessing I%26#39;ll run into the same international drop off fees if I rent a car in Salzburg and drop off in Prague? I want to do both cities but time is running short during that leg of the trip. A 6 hour train ride probably won%26#39;t be feasible :(
|||
if the 6 hour train trip is too much, how will you get between salzburg and prague - by private jet? it takes 5 hours to drive between salzburg and prague, so you may as well take the train and avoid the high drop off charges.
in addition, many austrian hire car companies and austrian branches of international car hire companies do not allow you to take an austrian registered car into the czech republic unless you pay additional insurance fee

We%26#39;re in a similar situation; we want to pick up a car in Amsterdam, cruise through several different countries, and return the car in Hamburg. Hertz was sounding great, and had no problem with international drop-off, until we mentioned we would be driving to Prague as part of our trip. They said they won%26#39;t allow their cars to go into the Czech republic. I believe my husband found the same issue with AutoEurope.
We%26#39;re now checking to see if exchanging the car when we get to Austria might be better - perhaps there they allow travel into the Czech Republic. I don%26#39;t know if this hesitancy is common in rental car agencies. I%26#39;d love to hear if you were successful - especially if you (or anyone else) can recommend a company!
|||
hertz are very conservative. for example if you hire a car from hertz here in prague, you are not allowed to drive it into the UK. all the other international hire car companies such as alamo, avis, sixt, budget, etc allow this. so try other companies - don%26#39;t think that what hertz does is the norm. that%26#39;s what having a private equity owner does to you as a company
|||
I%26#39;d take train for the Munich-Salzburg-Prague segments as it is more convenient than having to deal with car (parking fees, road tolls etc.) add those ridiculous restrictions about not letting a car accross the border, etc.

peb7 - thanks for the info. It%26#39;s good to hear that Hertz is an exception - I will look at more companies!!
