We%26#39;ll be passing through Prague (24 hours or so) in late October, and I%26#39;d really appreciate some advice.
Firstly, how to get from the airport into town? I%26#39;ve read various reviews and posts about taxis and public transport, but would like to know what you guys consider the best option for a family of 5 (2 adults, 3 kids 12 and under).
We%26#39;re looking for a budget place to stay, close to the center of town but also close to the railway station (catching a train to Vienna the next day). Any ideas? Hostels are fine, but if we could find a place with a private/ensuite for 5 that would be perfect!!
Lastly, any recommendations for family friendly restaurants would really help.
Thanks in advance!

taxis outside of prague airport struggle to fit 5 of you plus luggage in them. there are minibuses outside the airport door which you can jump into which cost 960 crowns for the whole minibus.
assume you are going to travel to vienna on from holesovice station rather than the other station, hlavni nadrazi. if so, the hotel expo is 10 minutes walk from the hotel. it is a bit basic. a better but more expensive hotel which is nearer the station is the hotel absolut.
if you are staying near holesovice, the best way from the airport is to catch the airport express bus which goes every 30 minutes from the bus station at the airport directly to holesovice station. cost is 45 crowns for adults and 25 crowns for chilrden, so cheaper than a taxi. a 24 hours public transport card (which you will need in addition to the airport express bus costs 80 crowns for adults and 40 crowns for children. holesovice is out of the centre, but you can get to the centre by metro or by tram
the pizzeria colesseum restaurants serve more than pizzas and are good for children. there is one on ovocny trh in the old town and one at the bottom of wenceslas square

Thank you peb7! This advice really helps a lot, especially the information about the train stations. I booked the flights and interrail passes yesterday and can%26#39;t wait to go now :-)

about the train station was a question. I am assuming that you are going from holesovice to vienna but not all of the vienna trains go from holesovice. some go from the central station, hlavni nadrazi. if the train you are going on is going from hlavni nadrazi it makes no sense to stay in holesovice.
if you are planning to go from prague to vienna on the fast pendolino trains (which all go from holesovice), you need to check whether your railcard is valid for this or whether you will need to pay a supplement

We are departing from Holesovice. I looked up train times on the www.db.de website (which has turned out to be a fantastic resource), and it doesn%26#39;t indicate that a reservation is needed for the train we want to take. But thanks for the heads-up. I think I%26#39;ll check with interRail anyway just to be on the safe side.

why would anyone think of looking at a website for german railways to enquire of a journey between prague (czech republic) and vienna (austria) which goes nowhere near germany. it is like looking at the russian railways website for a journey in china
czech railways times can be gained on www.idos.cz if the train is an SC train (the one%26#39;s taking 4 hours and 2 minutes), this is one of the modern pendolino trains and you need a ticket in advance and a seat reservation, although 30 minutes in advance is applicable.
of course, if you don%26#39;t believe local advice from locals who have actually travelled on this train, go ahead and rely on deutsche bahn%26#39;s website and see how far this gets you with a czech railways ticket collector

I apologize if I%26#39;ve offended you - of course I%26#39;d rather take advice from a local, which is why I tried this forum in the first place. I only meant that the DB site was good for looking up train times. Guess I%26#39;d better check all my other rail connections too :-) Thanks again for the advice - it%26#39;s much appreciated, believe me!!
