Hi guys,
I have been to Prague 5 times with my partner in the last 4 years, we love it and it holds a special place in our hearts. We now have a young baby (6mths) and want to keep visiting as we enjoy it so much. But.....
I can%26#39;t help feeling its not the place to take a baby as i am not sure how family friendly the place is. Having never looked at it in this light before i am struggling to see if a trip there would be more hassle than its worth? We%26#39;ll probably wait till she%26#39;s one and can eat the food we eat, but i%26#39;m not sure how welcoming the pubs/restaurants are?
Any advice from travellers with similar aged children would be fantastic as i want to get our apartment booked as soon as poss. Also anyone with any suggestions as to what we can do to keep her amused would also be welcomed!!
Thanks in advance.

you are not actually allowed to take a child into a pub, so this is out. you can though take children into restaurants which serve beer. that said, if you need to take a lot of kit with you, many of the upmarket restaurants are not openly child friendly unless you eat outside normal hours. the biggest issue is taking all the things that you need on the plane and transporting your young one on the plane. this though will be the same wherever you go to unless you go by car. staying in the old town where it is flatter is better than staying in the castle area. one thing though is to avoid winter - british winter childrens clothes are often not thick enough

Wow, your not allowed children in pubs? I see the point totally but this does make life difficult if wanting to visit Prague doesn%26#39;t it (sometimes you just want a quick snack and a beer rather than a whole meal). Mmmmm....maybe i need to rethink this then.
Taking the gear is not a problem, we%26#39;re used to travelling with the minimal amount of stuff anyway. Been around the world with a small rucksack of belongings so have no worries there!
Yeah, winter is pretty cold in Prague as i remember it, but its also just so beautiful too. Thanks Peb7 - as always ;-)

there are many pubs that look like restaurants and many restaurants that look like pubs. pubs %26quot;pivnice%26quot; are off bounds to children. restaurants %26quot;restaurace%26quot; you can take children to.
the point about cold is that it is very cold in winter (and very beautiful especially in the snow). your young one if when they cry cannot tell you the difference between when it is wind, nappy changing or it is freezing cold. many people take their winter anorack jumpsuit which is good for winters in the uk thinking it is good enough for their young child and whilst they put on the layers themselves, don%26#39;t put them on for their babies. result is cold, ear infection and a really horrible flight home when the air pressure gets to poor infected ears

So, can you tell me if the big beerhall/brewery near to Tesco%26#39;s is a restaurant or pub? My guess is Pub. Also, another of my faves is U Cervelho Vola, which i again presume is classed as a Pub?
|||
anything that looks like a beerhall is a pivnice.
but don%26#39;t really understand what the surprise is about. the general rule in the UK is that you cannot take a child under 14 years of age into a pub (unless it has a specific licence and then only to a certain area) and such pubs are generally those with restaurants. therefore the same type of rule exists here, nothing else.
as said above, there are though many restaurants that look like pubs; for example; kolkovna, which qualifies as a %26#39;restaurace%26#39;, rather than a %26#39;pivnice%26#39;

Peb7, this law no longer exists. It was scrapped many moons ago now. When i was growing up, pubs here used to have a %26quot;family%26quot; section, which was usually non-smoking. Families here are widely accepted (usually on provision that the kids are well behaved). Now the UK is non-smoking entirely, the Public House is now a whole more family friendly environment. I mean in this day and age why discriminate just because you have children?
So anyway, can any travellers on here with young children, any opinions if this trip would be worth while?? How did you find eating out, using transport etc?
Thanks in advance.

on the young familes, as said above, there are many young families living here - they eat at restaurants and not pivnices and often eat earlier. on the trams and metros, young mothers are well akin to lifting prams and buggies onto the trams and there is a special place at the back of each tramcar for this. on metros there is space and many metro stations in the city now have lifts, although buggies can easily be taken on the escalators.
the old town is flatter than the castle area so able to be negotiated more easily if you there. you mentioned an apartment. marriott is a corporate hotel within 5 minutes walk of the city centre, but one of the big advantages it has is with its in house babysitting service which does not cost the earth and from all reports is reliable. staying here and being very near the city centre and using this service can mean that you are able to have more freedom than if you stayed in a smaller hotel or in an apartment
on transport from the airport, taxis do not carry baby seats, but www.prague-airport-shuttle.com will provide one if you book in advance.

Hi I haven%26#39;t been myself with a baby, but a few months ago my brother and his girlfriend went with their baby who was 4 months at the time.
I don%26#39;t have a lot of details from their trip for you but i can tell you they seemed to get along with no trouble, however the following factors workied in their favour:
As far as getting to the apartment from the hotel, their pram had one of the %26#39;take out%26#39; car seats and then the frame folds down so they managed to get in a taxi no problem.
As far goes eatring out etc, they had nice weatehr on their side so usually just parked themselves outsde somewhere and pulled the buggy right up to the table so it wasn%26#39;t in the way. However they did say that wherever they went people were very accomodating to them and the little one, so shouldn%26#39;t ber a problem anyway.
Someone already mentioned that it might be better to stay away from the castle area as it is quite hilly, but they stayed at the %26#39;castle steps%26#39; apartment (which they said was lovey) in the castle district without any trouble (the baby is only very light though, and they are rdiculously fit people, which might have made a difference!)
Sorry this is all a bit vague but hope it helps a little!

Ooh sorry one more thing! you asked for suggestions to keep her amused- well it%26#39;s just a small thing but my brother said that they took my nephew on one of those river cruises and he loved it! maybe it was the rocking or something....

Kellytots...thanks for the suggestions, much appreciated.
Anybody else travelled with small children to Prague?
