travel from Prague to BadGastein

I am in need of help for information on taveling this week from Prague to BadGastein Austria. Rail and Bus travel I have no idea which way is easiest fastest and most ecenomical Thank you so much in advance for your help!!!!

|||

I think the train. check here:

www.gastein.com/en-contact-travel_tips.htm

prague to vienna by:

scpendolino.cz/en/…page.xhtml

from vienna:

http://www.oebb.at/vip8/oebb/en/index.jsp

optional there%26#39;s the bus from prague to vienna:

eurolines.cz/_pages/…2010-7-2007.pdf

good luck.

|||

prague to bad gastein via vienna is a long way. there is one direct train per day from prague to salzburg (from there you take the train to gastein), but it arrives at salzburg after midnight. by day there is a train leaving prague at 09.15 and arriving salzburg at 17.00 where you change at landshut in germany. gastein is about 2 hours from salzburg by train

if you want to go to a spa town, unless you are going to sit in the radioactive caves in gastein, karlovy vary only 2 hours from prague is much better. and if you go to the gasteinertal, bad hofgastein down the valley is much quieter and picturesque than staying in bad gastein itself

7 Angels Hotel,Prague

I have just found this little gem on Travelcook,and have booked 2 suites for July for me and the wife,and our friends.

The lower floor is even listed as a top restaurant on the pragueexperience site,and has its own website

I can only find one review here for this hotel,does anyone else here have experience of this place?

|||

I will paste the website here,showing the Rooms and Restaurant.

http://www.7angels.cz/

|||

We will be there in early May, I can let you know after we get back, otherwise, I am wondering the same about the place as you. There are some nice comments on the feedback page of the Travelcook, though some dated, sounds and looks nice.

|||

Went there in December 2004. Very central, full of character and extremely quiet. Highly recommended.

|||

Thanks people

|||

I didn%26#39;t stay at the 7 Angels Hotel, but went to eat at the restaurant December 2005 as a result of this review, referring to pragueexperience.com rating it a %26quot;top%26quot; restaurant.

7 Angels Restaurant was without a doubt the worst meal I%26#39;ve ever had: soup with frozen carrots and canned peas; inedible %26quot;pork%26quot; that was literally a slice of salt, slopped-on %26quot;sauerkraut%26quot;, stale dessert, etc. Every single item was terrible.

There%26#39;s been a lot of talk recently on the travel boards about bogus reviews of hotels and restaurants; I would seriously question the judgment of anyone who reports that the 7 Angels Restaurant serves good food.

If you see a Heinz 57 Ketchup bottle on the condiment tray like I did here, think twice.

|||

Got to say that we were thinking of eating at this place but when we got there decided it was a bit too touristy and found somewhere else. Can%26#39;t really comment on what it is like to stay there though!

|||

Just because the restaurant may be a tourist rip off doesn%26#39;t mean don%26#39;t stay there; there are many better places you can eat at nearby, as the hotel has a good central location five minutes walk from the old town square. There are in fact 7 reviews of the hotel on this site and nearly all are positive

|||

It may be so that the hotel is okay, but I was responding specifically to the OP talking about its %26quot;top restaurant.%26quot; And many people find it a big advantage if an restaurant attached to their hotel is pleasing.

My other advice was to take the evaluations of pragueexperience.com with a grain of salt.

|||

Where possible, I always try not to eat in the restaurant in the hotel in which I am staying in. There may be exceptions; Tirana and Pristina being obvious examples to spring to mind, but by getting out, you see more of a place.

|||

That really doesn%26#39;t make any sense to me, that you %26quot;try not to eat in the restaurant in the hotel in which you are staying in%26quot;. There are many fine restaurants attached to hotels in this world; it is very convenient occasionally after a long day of touring to eat close to %26quot;home%26quot;. Further, if I choose not to ever leave the street I am staying on, that is my style of vacation and not for anyone to evaluate.

I question Peb7%26#39;s aggressive responses to my criticism, going out of your way twice now trying to put a positive spin on this.

I repeat, the 7 Angels Restaurant was TERRIBLE, so run as fast as you can away from it. And if you happen to become ill while staying at the 7 Angels Hotel and need some food sent to you room, make sure they bring it from somewhere other than their own restaurant.

Help needed - stolen memory cards - reward offered

Car burglary in to our car happened 9.8-10.8 in Prague, Lublanska 67.

The following items were stolen: Nikon D70, two 512 KB, two 1 GB and one 2 GB CompactFlash -cards, most importantly14 SD-cards (three 1 GB and eleven 2 GB cards) with approximately 1.800 holidays photos and a mass storage unit with 80 GB storage capacity.

The photos in the SD-cards were taken 22.7-3.8 from Riga, Vilnius, Warsaw, Zagreb, Split and Korcula Island.

I pay for the SD-cards and the mass storage twice the normal price, if the photos are still undeleted. (Actually I don’t even need the memory cards, if there is a another way to get the photos)

Kind regards

|||

What a nightmare for you. Try also posting on expats.cz, since the locals are more likely to be able to help you than the tourists.

|||

have you contacted the police. sometimes the people hand the bits that they don%26#39;t want in.

whilst this is obviously awful, can I ask where did you leave the camera equipment - in the car boot or on the back seat? I am reading above that the burglary was not of the car, but just of the camera equpment. from the description 9.8 - 10.8, does this mean that the camera equipment was left in the car overnight, on the street?

Transport issue

I%26#39;ve figured out I can purchase a 7 day card. However which is the easiest way to get from Hotel ARia to Prazska Trznice (Prague market) Holesovice. I haven%26#39;t figured out tram routes yet as the lines on map go all over the place! Is Hotel Aria walking distance from the Old Town Square and Wencelas Sq?

|||

Hi

Your hotel is near Malostranske namesti and only 3-400m from Charles bridge so walking distance it is.

According to www.dpp.cz the easiest way from Malostranske nam to Praszka Trznice is to take tram 12 northwards to Sparta and then tram nr 25 to the market.

There are also some tram and metro maps to download fron the site.

|||

aria is walking distance from the old town square but not from the prague market at holesovice (which is not really worth going to as it sells fuit and veg which you can get elsewhere in the city and cheap or what looks like counterfeit sports clothes in a very run down area.

as you are central, you don%26#39;t really need a 280 crown 7 day card. just buy a few 20 crown single ticket cards at the airport when you arrive or at the ticket machines from any metro station

tram 12 which you catch from malostranske namesti normally does not go to sparta but is temporarily diverted due to tram repairs. changing at letenske namesti is easier as this means you can catch trams 1 and 25 to the market

|||

Thanks for that info. - Here is a silly question - will the stations be marked so I%26#39;ll know which one to get off at?

|||

tram stops are marked by the side of the road, but you will not see that from a busy tram. there are electronic signs in the trams which tell you the next tramstop and they do anounce the next tram stop on the intercom %26quot;pristi zastavka ....%26quot;

|||

upcoming stations are announced in the tram. the stop beside the market is holesovicka trznice. it%26#39;s close to the river on the right, mc donalds on the left...

|||

I was recently at the airport and (I AM NOT MAKING THIS UP!) there were at least 50 people waiting for service at the MHD booth. I don%26#39;t know any hotel that does not sell the single journey tickets and, as peb said, you don%26#39;t need a pass.

|||

Thanks for all the help. The hotel will collect me at the airport. I%26#39;ll walk around the first day and figure out some of the main attractions i.e. Old Town and New Town. I%26#39;ll buy a few once off travel tickets and see how we get on. I might go to the Prague Market and I%26#39;ll need them for that trip

|||

if the public transport ticket booth at terminal 1 (which is the busiest) has a big queue, simply walk to the arrivals area in terminal 2 which is next door, where there are normally hardly any queues at the prague transport authority offices (and still have the booth signposted %26quot;metro - tram - bus%26quot;). taxis and buses also go from terminal 2 to the city if you don%26#39;t want to walk back to terminal 1

Train/bus from Prague to Zagreb with overnight in Vienna?

Hi;

My husband and I are traveling to Prague where we will be for 1 week and then we are going to Zagreb. Any advice on best way time/expense to get there? We are planning on staying overnight in Vienna on the 29th traveling onto Zagreb on 30th Oct. and returning on day trains Zagreb to Prague non-stop on Nov. 4th. Any advice on best routing and pricing would be great. Also any advice on what to see and do while there would be fantastic.

Thanks much.

|||

My goodness you must like train journeys! That%26#39;s a 12 hour trip.

Directr trains between Prague and Vienna, then direct again between Vienna and Zabreb (Glavni Kolod).

For train times, best for you to make up your own mind. I like either deutschbahn (www.db.de) or swiss railways (www.sbb.ch) websites for finding out pan-european train times.

I guess your looking at US$200- 300 for the trip, but someone else might know better. You will do best to buy your ticket once you get to Prague - the international rail ticket websites tend to overcharge.

|||

from prague to vienna check:

scpendolino.cz/en/…page.xhtml

it%26#39;s discount tickets for the pendolino train, you can only buy in czech republic. there%26#39;s a link :

scpendolino.cz/en/…page.xhtml

where you can buy your ticket by phone call, don%26#39;t know if valid for discounted tickets. otherwise the fare is double that much. vienna/ zagreb, zagreb/prague i%26#39;d ask in the bosnia? forum...

|||

for train times from vienna to zagreb, swiss or german railways are not really the sites to look at if the journey doesn%26#39;t go through germany and switzerland. try looking at the austrian railways site www.oebb.at

question is, what are you going to do overnight in vienna. it does not seem long enough to look at the city. if you want an overnight stop, there is a direct train from prague to ljubljana every day leaving prague at 0632 and arriving ljubljana at 17.32, with an onward connection to zagreb which can have you in zagreb at 20.00. therefore you can do the journey in one day instead of in two

Prague in two day

I m coming to Prague in Sept for a business trip. I am coming two days early to do some site seeing. Can someone provide the must sees in the city for a two day itenariry.

Also, is the city still crowded in late Sept from summer tourists?? and what is the weather like then.

thanks so much.

|||

A good general overview give you Jasons page, the Prague Expert %26quot;Sova%26quot;: www.livingprague.com

City is always crowded, especially in September. Weather is not really preditable anymore, if you are lucky it is warm and the sun is still out. But you should check closer to the date with the weather forcast.

|||

Hi,

Maybe spend a day up around the castle area %26amp; a day around the old town. Many things are within easy walking distance of each other %26amp; many hotels provide free maps (if you haven%26#39;t got one already) so you should be able to fit in quite a lot, even in 48 hrs.

We spent 4.5 days there in May %26amp; never used public transport once; we just walked from dawn till dusk. The achitecture is wonderful; have a great time.

Regards

|||

We are also in Atlanta, and are going in a week. We will let you know.

|||

I just returned from 30 days in Prague and posted a report of all my activities. Take a look it may help you with some ides.

-Linda

|||

nephthys%26#39; itinerary is spot on - spend the first day exploring the castle area and the 2nd day the old town. prague will be busy in late september but not so busy that you have to fight through crowds of people

Reliable Weather Reporting Sites?

I%26#39;m looking at the long term weather for Thursday the 16th.

Weather Underground (wunderground.com) says 29C, 20% chance of precipitation. The Weather Channel, (uk.weather.com) says 22C, 60% chance of rain. Not exactly the same.

What is for you, the most reliable weather predicting site for the Czech Republic?

|||

I%26#39;d say a Czech website, www.praha.cz/pocasi ,who also predict 22 degrees and 60 % chance of rain. The difference with the others is that the previous day it is still warm and dry and for Wunderground it stays like that one more day and for the others not.

|||

no long term weather forecast is reliable these days - you need to look at short term forecasts nearer the time and then don%26#39;t rely on them fully.

for weather, I follow czech tv more than anything else. it said today that thursday would be thunderstorms with about 28 degrees. the weekend though should be sunny

www.livingprague.com Thanks to jason

Dear Jason,

many thanks for setting up this website. . it has been extremely helpful in my search for accommodation . . .

and thanks to MartinaPrague for pointing out this site . . ther eis So much on this sight . . . almost too much o take in

and so this request:

Question: What would be your top three recommendations for accom here in Pargaue -

our budget is betweeen £50 and £80 per night. Preferably a double room and en suite for our 30th wedding anniversary. We arrive 19th sept for three nights. We%26#39;d prefer a quietish place with character and scenes but not too far walking from the sights. . . I know that it is quite a request .

but thanks for any info received

glyn and ninon, Swansea, Wales, UK

|||

jason%26#39;s website is very good. 50 to 80 pounds a night in september does not buy you much in the centre. the cloister inn, hastal and the pav all have decent reviews on this site, as does the u karluv mostu and constans in the castle area

|||

Hi Peb7

thanks for the info

however I cannot find a web page for u karluv mostu

do you have any other links or contact details for this establishment please. regards G

BW Premier Hotel Majestic Plaza - Štěpánská 33, 110 00 Praha

Hi has anybody stayed in this hotel? Is it nice and what about the location? Thanks

|||

newly opened hotel about 20 minutes walk from the edge of the old town and to wenceslas square. there is one review on the reviews section of this site under %26#39;prague hotels%26#39; which is bad .This may be that the hotel is having teething problems, but from the comments it is more due to the person%26#39;s dislike of the design

|||

Hi Peb7, would you recommend this hotel or have you any other suggestions? I am looking for a nice hotel to stay with my Mum for her 70th birthday. Thanks a mill

|||

must confess I have never been there. hotel has a good location though. for a 70th birthday, renaissance or marriott may be more appropriate and give better service, but they may be more expensive

|||

i pass by there almost every day on the way to the pub and it looks great from outside but if you%26#39;re staying over the weekend with your mum, i%26#39;d rather look for something around old town sqaure...

Where to stay?

My friend and I are going to Prague for 5 nights at the end of the month. (Can%26#39;t wait!). It is just two of us and we are girls in our mid 20%26#39;s. We plan on doing a lot of sightseeing, some shopping, but we definitely want to hit some bars and good restaurants. Any advice on an area to stay in or a hotel in particular. We don%26#39;t want to spend over $200 (USD) a night. We are both from NYC so we could probably figure out the metro if need be. Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

I, along with most people who reviewed Hotel Atlantic gave it high marks, though at this time of year it may be a bit more than $200US per night.

|||

if you want to stay out of the city centre by the metro, hotel anna is 5 minutes walk from the metro has good reviews on this site and is able to be walked back to (25 minutes from centre) if you stay out after the metros have closed

|||

I can recommend Guesthouse Lida. We stayed there 3 nights this past April. They have a web site.

|||

Hi RSB,

I was in Prague last month and I stayed at the Cloister Inn. I loved the location, it was very close to the Charles Bride and a short walk from Old Town and Lesser Town. Bars and Restaurants were plentiful in that area. There were three girls in our 20%26#39;s and we had a great time!! Enjoy your trip.

Split btwen Prague-Budapest -Vienna trip

My boyfriend and I are going to visit Prague, Budapest %26amp; Vienna this September. We hope you could help us out with figuring out how to best allocate and split our time between these three cities (how many days do we need for each, should it be an even split?). We will have 8 days available. Any other general advice on activities, sight-seeing, in-between city trains, eating out, etc would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

|||

if you have 8 days, spend 3 days each in prague and vienna and 2 days in budapest. there is less to see in budapest and the city generally looks dirtier than the other two

prague to budapest by train is 7 hours, prague to vienna is 4 hours and vienna to budapest 2.5 hours

|||

I completely disagree with the above post. I went to Prague, Vienna and Budapest in May of this year, and Budapest was hands down my favourite. We had planned 4 days there and stayed for 8. We found so many things we wanted to see and do (Danube cruise, Castle, Hungarian Baths, Terror Museum, Climb to the Indpendence statue, Basillica, Synagogue, Day trip to a village, wine tour). The nightlife was the BEST of anywhere we went in Eastern Europe.

I suppose it comes down to a matter of personal preference, but dont be so quick to discount Budapest.

PS. It may be dirtier than the other cities, but it also has more character.

|||

Hi

I%26#39;d spend six days in Prague and just drive through the other two.

We went to Vienna last year and the first thing I noticed when we got off the boat was the litter and general grubbiness. Budapest is just not as spectacular as Prague, although I have done a bit more research ready for my next visit, the first time we went it was less than nice. Incidentally my son has just been there too and he said there was little more the city could do to make him hate it more.

If you are following the itinerary of these three cities make Prague the last on the list, otherwise the other two will be a massive dissapointment.

Jackie

|||

I think it depends on what you like to do.

When I was just out of university I visited all 3 cities in a row. Budapest was by far my favourite because it had better nightlife, and I loved the turkish baths. The pastries were as good as Vienna but lots cheaper and we seemed to spend several days lounging in the baths and then at the cafe. I%26#39;d been travelling for many weeks by this point and I appreciated that there wasn%26#39;t a huge amount of cultural monuments to see.

Now, I prefer Prague and Vienna. I love the buildings, the art, the opera, the ballet, the palaces and castles and the good restaurants. The cities are easier to handle and I prefer compact to sprawl.

Nowadays I would agree with Peb on 3 each for Prague and Vienna and 2 for Budapest, but 10 years ago I%26#39;d would have said 4 Budapest, 1-2 Vienna (much more expensive than the others) and 2 Prague.

I hope this helps explain the contradictory replies you got.

|||

utterly disagree with Peb7 who seems to be putting down Budapest at every possible chance. Budapest is far larger than Prague and maybe not as clean as Prague but show me a capital city that%26#39;s as pristine as a village.In Prague sights are within walking distance whereas in Budapest you do have rely on public transport.

My suggestion would be 2 days in Prague and 3 days in Vienna and Budapest.

Start off in Budapest than a short(approx. 3-4hours) train ride to Vienna and finish in Prague approx.4-6hours ride from Vienna.

Have a nice trip!

|||

Notice that your original post was July 30, so you%26#39;ve probably already set your plans by now, but just had to add my two cents.

I have to agree that, while everything is a matter of personal preference, Budapest should not be discounted. We spent 7 days traveling through these three cities, and at the end of the trip, concluded that Budapest was our favorite. They were all great, and I wouldn%26#39;t miss any of them, but we just liked Budapest most. Instead of simply saying %26quot;Yea for Budapest!%26quot;, I%26#39;ll try to explain what we disliked and liked about each, so that it might help you decide.

Prague - Very pretty city. Definitely the most picturesque, on the whole, of the three, and more reminiscent of the %26quot;Old World.%26quot; From the hilltop near the castle, you can look down on the city and the river and see beautiful green trees and a sea of red tile roofs. The architecture, ranging from Roman to Gothic, to Baroque to modern has been relatively undisturbed by war, so you can see more of it here than anywhere else. I%26#39;m a Franz Kafka fan, so enjoyed that also. There is an FK museum. What we didn%26#39;t like were the throngs of tourists. Of course, we were tourists too, so can%26#39;t really fault anyone else for being there, but all the popular tourist areas were very crowded. Prague is the %26quot;place to be%26quot; in Eastern Europe, and apparently, everyone is going. On the other hand, it probably has the largest number of %26quot;must-see%26quot; places, so spending the larger portion of your trip in Prague may not be a bad idea.

Vienna - Very nice, modern and sleek, but still retaining lots of beautiful old architecture and character. Definitely the most modern and developed of the three, with the greatest number of nice hotels, restaurants and shops. A trip to the suburbs/outskirts and some of the neighborhoods around the city will still reveal some very nice, quaint areas. And don%26#39;t get me wrong, we enjoyed Vienna very much, but it didn%26#39;t seem to have as much obviously unique character as the other two. I%26#39;m sure that for those who live there, Vienna is very unique, but then again, since they live there, they have the time and opportunity to really get to know the city, but for a visitor on a short trip, one doesn%26#39;t have that opportunity, so you judge a city by its surface character, and Vienna just didn%26#39;t seem to have as much on the surface. I%26#39;ve said this before in another post, and started a lot of disagreement (among locals defending their turf) but it seemed to me like just another big European city. Again, I liked Vienna, and I will definitely go back, but compared to the other two, and not by a large margin, it was probably my least favorite.

Budapest - For us, it was a nice combination of old world charm and modern convenience. Plenty of beauty, architecture, panoramic views of the city and river, etc (although not as much as Prague) but not nearly as crowded with tourists as Prague. Also a better bargain cost-wise. One note on Budapest, however, is that it seems to pretty quickly lose a lot of its charm as you move away from the center (sort of the opposite of Vienna). If you stay concentrated on the city center, around the Chain Bridge and castle district, it is very nice. So in the end, we liked Budapest best, but it was mainly because of the crowds in Prague. If you could spend time in Prague without the crowds, I think it would probably be the most enjoyable of the three.

|||

whether you like prague , budapest or vienna is as said above all down to personal preference. I give my personal preference - I am not a fan of budapest as much as I am of prague and vienna. budapest in terms of development since 1989 is somewhat behind prague - you only need to look at the surroundings on the drive into the city from prague and budapest airports to compare.

budapest is not helped by the fact that it was two cities until little over 100 years ago (and so there is no real city centre unlike in vienna and prague). also, unlike prague, there was severe fighting in the war, with the result that the castle was destroyed. ou can see from the wide boulevards that it was the centre of an empire, unlike prague, but if you go after vienna it will disappoint you. prague is dirty, but I find budapest more so. the traffic also makes it very polluted.

the baths are unique and worth going to, but in some, the rules are a bit hard to understand and not a pleasant experience if you get them wrong.

so do go to budapest, but go before prague and vienna and do compare between the three

|||

these are three incredible cities - frankly, I would see only two of them, any two, and leave the third for another time.

new years in prague

hi can anyone tell me a nice but not too expensive hotel to stay in for new years eve. We have never been to Prague before so any tips would be great

thanks

Ann

|||

People usualy like to know how much your budget will beso they can point you in the right dirrection.

|||

the castle side of the river is much quieter and safer for new years eve than the old town side. do not know what you mean by %26#39;not too expensive ...%26#39; for some people this may mean 100 pounds a night, for others, 250 pounds a night may not be too expensive. the constans has good reviews on this site and is only 10 minutes walk from the charles bridge. the u karlova mostu and the residence lundborg are even nearer. try also looking at the castle steps apartments which many people have commented favourably on this site and which do provide breakfast

|||

Peb ,is the Karlov Mostu the hotel with the lovely pubs 1and 2?

|||

it is certainly a hotel next to the charles bridge (on na kampe street) with a decent pub on the ground floor (don%26#39;t know about %26quot;1 and 2%26quot;)

think it is an archibald hotel in which case the website is www.archibald.cz

|||

Yes thats it they have a pub1 at the front of the hotel that leads directly out at the back through a beer garden to the river where we were able to board a riverboat,pub 2 is round the side they are both charming places with roaring fires and typical czech cuisine.

TORII

|||

I just assumed that they were the same pub, but with different rooms. it is a good place and reasonably priced

|||

P.S I have just remembered I put a picture on, standing outside pub 1of the place on My Tripadvisor in January..

|||

before or after the beer?

|||

torii yep lovely view of charles bridge from some of the rooms, would be a good choice for New Year.

|||

Do I sound like I drink Beer???

my picture on the left is Na Kampa street in the snow.

English Language Newspaper

I realized my hotel doesn%26#39;t have a TV and I like to keep up with international and local news when I travel. I assume larger news kiosks will have an international newspaper selection (is this a correct assumption?), but wanted to see if there was also a Czech paper that was available in English so I could keep an eye out for it.

Thanks.

|||

many of the newstands in the city centre have english language newspapers. the international herald tribune and the international version of the guardian are sold on the same day basis - other newspapers are sold one day behind.

there is an english language weekly newspaper here called the prague post but it won%26#39;t tell you anything about what is happening in the outside world.

your hotel doesn%26#39;t have a tv? which hotel are you staying in? part of the joy of being on holiday is to escape from the news. if you want to catch up, one hour on the internet in an internet cafe will be cheaper than buying one edition of an international newspaper

Staying at an apartment

I have been offered a two bedroom apartment at Ujezd street in Prague. Is this a good and safe area ?

|||

it%26#39;s ok, quite a busy street in the day time and the trams pass nearby 24 hours, so maybe check what side of the building and which floor...

|||

as heinokules rightly says it is the tram noise you need to check. ujezd is a narrow street and trams pass all day and night shaking some buildings. if you have a low floor room or a room overlooking the street, don%26#39;t expect much sleep if you are a light sleeper

karoliny apartment

Has anyone stayed at karoliny apartments or know where i can get reviews on it

thanks

|||

no reviews on this site, but from websites, the apartments look quite refurbished. karoliny svetle street is a quiet street in the old town about 10 minutes walk from the old town square and 10 minutes walk from a large supermarket if you need

|||

thanks peb can you recommend an appartment for 6 women in ther 30s

|||

look at some of the companies below who offer apartments

www.pragueexperience.com

www.marys.cz

www.homesweethome.cz

www.appia-apartments.com

it may be that two apartments in the same building may be cheaper than one large apartment sleeping 6 people

mala strana hotel

Sorry for yet another hotel question. I like the looks of U Tri Capu in Mala Strana, found great price, but there are only four reviews so far. Wondering about the location, Tomasska, is it a hike from the river area? I know most people like the other side of the river, but I think we would prefer a quieter section, as long as public transportation is available nearby (I%26#39;m assuming the tram would be the best option). Any comments about this hotel or this area would be greatly appreciated.

Pam

|||

It%26#39;s in the waldstein area, 200m beside charles bridge, great location, tram nearby, even metro and peb7%26#39;s favourit restaurant! the reason there%26#39;s only a few comments might be that the whole complex was under reconstruction for quite a while, i%26#39;m not even sure if it was a hotel befor. the street it%26#39;s on is busy in the day time, traffic jams during rush hour but quite in the evening. if the 4 reviews are ok and the price is ok, go ahead, you%26#39;ll be fine...

|||

I love Mala Strana area. Personally that%26#39;s my first choice when I visit Prague. Much quieter it seems, as you said, compared to Old Town Square side. I stayed on and near Ujezd 3 times in last 6 months that is close to the funicular station to Petrin Hill. Very nice area + a junction for many tram lines, very convenient. I don%26#39;t know your hotel but near Tomassaka, there is for example Hotel Wallenstein, nearby, isn%26#39;t there? Fine location I think. No hike at all from the river side. It gets uphill only from Sv.Mikulase church on to Nerudova. Malostranske Namesti behind the church is just a few minute walk from your hotel I suppose. So many tram lines pass there.

|||

Thank you very much!!

Pam

|||

tomasska is right by the malsontranske namesti. have a high floor room as the tri capu has a busy pub / restaurant worth going to, and try to have one with a castle view (this has the view and has the lower tram noise).

to be honest, you don%26#39;t need public transport at all. the castle is a 15 minute hike up the hill and the old town square is 20 minutes walk across the charles bridge - you can walk to almost everywhere you see.

heinokules. what is my favourite restaurant? I believe I only disclosed my favourite restaurant when it closed down earlier this year and have not knowingly disclosed as my favourite restaurant my other favourite restaurant (and sorry, never will, as I want to be able to walk in there without making a reservation 2 weeks in advance)

|||

Thanks, Peb. Won%26#39;t you please recommend a good restaurant or two for me in that neighborhood?

Thanks!

Pam

|||

the waldeijnska hospoda in the hotel is worth visiting. two good restaurants with river views within 5 minutes walk of the hotel are kampa park and less formal, hergetova cihelna. you should make bookings for both

|||

I wanted to add that the group of friends I visited Prague with in June also loved this area and would choose it as a place to stay in the future.

|||

Just back from long weekend in Prague. We stayed at Hotel Atos on Melnicka, Mala Strana. We liked staying in this area as it is quiet and not far from Old Town and Castle. There is a great Italian Restaurant on Ujzed called Amedeo. Really good food at very reasonable prices. We could walk to most places, but if you were feeling lazy the hotel could organise taxis at preset rates and the drivers were very helpful and sometimes gave you a bit of local information.

Good Prague Restaurant guide website, anybody?

I am spending a week in Prague and I hate to leave it to chance on restaurants. Anybody know of a good Zagat-like website for the Prague and Budapest areas? Thanks!

- jason

|||

Try Zagat.com itself, then also www.igougo.com and www.expats.cz/prague/restaurants .

Good luck. You also find many personal recommendations in a very lengthy recent post here called %26quot;Trip report, 30 days in Prague....%26quot; (last reply currently 7 August)

|||

For THE restaurant guide, www.pragueexperience.com/restaurants

as it has menus with pricelist, no reviews but those you can find at the other mentioned websites.

|||

Brewsta (local expert) does a restaurant blog

http://czechoutchannel.blogspot.com/

|||

Thanks for the promo, kind sir.

|||

brewsta%26#39;s website is excellent, but he gets a bit touchy if you criticise him drinking stella at haute cuisine establishments

other restraurant guides are www.squaremeal.cz and on www.inyourpocket.com but these of course only highlight those restaurants who pay to be included on the lists. brewsta%26#39;s reviews are allegedly unpaid for (except that he is bribed occasionally to review gelatteria%26#39;s in response to receiving a free gelatto)

|||

* Guilty as charged on the Stella incident. I turn savage when people are snobbier than me.

* Guilty as charged on accepting the free gelato, and then writing about it and the fact that I can be bought for the price of a few Indian mangoes. I was weak.

I only hope my readers can forgive these lapses. If it means anything to anyone, they should know that Peb7 has decided to give me at least one more chance.

|||

brewsta no need to apologise for anything. your website is excellent.

I use brewsta%26#39;s website to visit restaurants which I have not been to and which you have kindly volunteered to be a guinea pig and report on (but only of course if you give the restaurant a good rating)

|||

Thanks, Peb. My tongue was firmly in my cheek as I wrote my mea culpa, but it is always a challenge to transfer the wry tone I hear in my head to a few short words on the screen.

If only I weren%26#39;t so prejudiced against emotions...

Teaser: I hope to have an epic Czech Please post about Bohemia Bagel Express up by the end of the day.

|||

bohemia bagel express. does that mean they deliver what you order within 30 minutes?

|||

Oy ! I meant to write %26quot;emoticons.%26quot; Another blown piece of humor.

Bohemia Bagel Express is an outlet that serves a more limited menu from a window in a little shack up on Tylovo Namesti, near IP Pavlova.

Wencelas Aparthotel Melantrich. Anybody stayed here before?

Hi. Has anybody stayed at this apartment complex and what do they think of it in terms of location, safety, rooms, etc?

If you can send some replies it would be great.

thanks

|||

set right on wenceslas square which may be your cup of tea if you are on a stag party weekend, but not if you are a family with children.

apartments are fairly basic, but as they are 4th floor upwards, even though the square is busy, they should be quiet

|||

Does it a have a safe in the complex for guests to use?

|||

you probably need to ask the agency you are booking with - none of the websites I have looked at make reference to a safe, and with apartments it is often not standard equipment

branik

hi

can anyone give me some info we are staying in branik

how far is it to the old town ?

how much are the taxi%26#39;s ?

were can we buy 3 day passes for the trams ?

is it safe to travel on public transport in the evening ?

|||

from what I remember the Branik area is well to the south of the city and you will either have to use trams or buses to get to the center.i travel to prague quite often but have only been in the Branik area once.

Exactly where are you staying?

3 day passes for the transport system (trams ,metro and buses one ticket does all) can be got fromthe transport authority stand at the airport at some metro stations and in the main Tourist info offices.

public transport is a safe as anywhere else and safer than some,watch out for pick-pockets on the busier trams and metros.

|||

Many thanks for your reply staying ay the divadla hotel

|||

found it on my map it is in the south of the city and just on my Prague map,not far from a whole host of trams that will get you to various parts of the city very quickly ,i would think no more than 15-20 minutes.The main trams run frequently till about midnight but there are late night trams about every 30 minutes through the night ,according to my map 3,16,17 %26amp;21 are your main trams and the 54 your night tram.maybe one of the locals can confirm this info .

|||

good map, unclegus! number 3 takes you to wenceslas square and nmumber 17 really close to old town square. the night tram 54 goes every 30 minutes from the middle of wenceslas square, if you%26#39;re still out after midnight. according to a comment on ta it%26#39;s a 5 min walk to the tram stop and a 20 min ride on the tram.

i%26#39;d copy the name and all the numbers of the tram stop beside the hotel anyway so if in the city you can always check for number and direction. probably i%26#39;d also write down the time of the night tram on wenceslas square, so you don%26#39;t have to wait 29 min (in the worst case).

don%26#39;t bother with taxis, the normal fare would be already dearer than the 3 day pass. even the night tram is very safe.

|||

Heinokules,Its the Insight travel map and i have had it for many years,it is falling to bits and the newer versions of the maps don%26#39;t have the trams marked on them. It also has the metro system on a separate section and smaller scale maps of the greater Prague area and road map of the Czech republic The map has been an absolute Godsend on my various trips to Prague and surrounding areas as i tend not to stick to the main tourist areas (going to football and pubs and breweries i have heard about).

|||

3 and 17 are the trams (although the hotel is some 10 minutes uphill walk from the tram stop). they will have you into the city as soon as a taxi will, but allow 45 minutes into and out of the city each journey

you can buy 3 day tram passes from the prague transport authority offices at the airport in the arrivals hall once you have cleared customs (where you see the sign %26quot;metro - tram - bus%26quot;)

|||

thank-you peb7 this is very helpfuk

|||

apologies peb7 for my spelling of helpful still waiting for my new spectacles, once again sincere apologies and thanks for your help

|||

if you are a golfer, there is a new course in the south of prague about 10 minutes taxi ride from the hotel

|||

brilliant thanks peb7

Quick trip report

Just got back from a two night/three day trip from prague. This was my fourth trip to Prague and I still think its a special city. I won%26#39;t bore you with all the details but just a few things to mention. We stayed in the Hotel Rott just behind old town Square. The best thing about this hotel is the location and the price. The rooms and hotel decor are nothing special. The hotel staff were fine though.

Again we used the Cedaz transportation service to and from the airport. The price is cheaper if you use them on the return trip.

Two restaurants I tried for the first time were %26quot;Klasterni Pivovar%26quot; at Strahov Monastery and La Bodeguita Del Medio near Staromestska Metro. Both were very good. Everyone especially liked the Klasterni pivovar.

Noticed very few stag/hen groups this time. I think I only saw 3 groups all weekend. Previous trips in summer I would see at least 5 to 6 groups each day. The usual haunts of stag/hen parties were also very quiet this time.

I certainly did not notice any reduction in the number of tourists though. The Sunday was the busiest I have ever seen the castle, Charles Bridge and the Old Town.

I tried the dark beers for the first time on this visit and I was instantly hooked. The Czech beers (apart from Staropramen) are far far better than the lagers we have in Britain.

I only used the ATM machines to get money. Luckily my bank does not charge me comission to take money out abroad. And the conversion was done at around 2kr higher than the rate you get in England.

Thanks for the help you all gave me about the trams. We eventually got the metro from Staromestska to Malostranska and then changed onto a tram to Ujezd to get the funicular upto Petrin park. Note that the queue for the funicular was very long. We had to wait for two trains to get on.

Suprised to see that the price of beers in some of the pubs has not changed in two years. Cheapest beer was in Hostinec U Templare. Also U Vejvodu was also still quite cheap.

The Wencelas Square area is still awful in my opinion. I can%26#39;t think of anything to recommend it unless you like shops. I still think the area South of Old Town is the best in Prague. I love the little alleyways that provide the short cuts to Old Town Sq and Charles bridge. Shame the same alleyways are closed at night.

Not much more to add really. I still enjoy prague and will certainly make many more visits there.

|||

wenceslas square is poor, dirty. the only recommendation I would have for people is to go to the bottom of the square at mustek and look up the square to the national museum and go no further.

hotel rott has a good new restaurant called le bifteque. you should have eaten there

Cheap and Central

Hi,

Can anyone advise a cheap, central hotel in the city centre.

Two young men going for a wild week.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

alchymist vs santini residence

i can not decide which of the two to pick for our break in october.i like the idea of the spa at the alchymist but after reading a recent bad report on this i am wondering if we should choose the alchymist after all.i am also a little worried about reading a few reports that the beds are not too comfy there also.has anyone stayed at either hotels?

|||

lots of reviews of both hotels on the reviews section of this site under %26#39;prague hotels%26#39;, although I do not know if they mention if the beds are comofrtable or not. of course bed comfort varies from person to person - some people prefer hard beds, others prefer soft beds

alchymist is more kitschy in your face new money style and santini is more discreet old money type luxury, but is up the castle hill, so you need to walk up it every time (or take the tram round to the castle and walk thorugh the castle)

Chanes of snow in Prague first week of December?

Will be in Prague the first few days of December. What are the chances we%26#39;ll have snow? (We actually want snow, so we%26#39;re hoping the odds are good!) Thanks!

|||

20% or less. normally the first snow at least in prague comes later in the year and often between christmas and new year

|||

It snowed on our last night and day in Prague in early December 2005. A few heavy showers fell in the evening whilst we walked through the old town and across Charles Bridge. Then the next day the snow started falling in the morning and continued through the afternoon. But it took a long time for the snow to start sticking to the ground in the old town. It mainly settled only on roofs and in Petrin park and higher up on the castle side. It certainly made my weekend though.

|||

It hardly snowed at all last year in the center of Prague.

|||

And the 2nd week of December at the Xmas market it was so mild I couldnt beleive it!

It had better be colder this year so I can wear my scarves!!!

TORII

|||

Do they have christmas decorations up in early Dec we are thinking of going on 1 Dec?

x

|||

Yes they do , we are going on the 1st as well!!

TORII

|||

they have christmas decorations and the christmas market running on December 1st

Prague questions - when to go? Trains/Planes? Where to stay?

My boyfriend and I (early 30s) are planning a trip to Prague in October from the US. We are planning about a 10 day trip, with 3 days in Prague, and 7 days in Vienna/Salzburg in Austria. Although we would certainly like to see the major sites, we are also hoping to experience true Czech culture in a short visit.

I would appreciate any help on the following questions:

1. Is there a certain time in October that is better to visit than others? Early Oct? Late Oct?

2. Where in Prague should we stay? Old town? Any hotel recommendations?

3. Is 3 days in Prague enough? Obviously more would be better, but we are limited on vacation time and would also like to go to Austria.

4. What is the best way to get from Prague to Vienna? Train? Are flights readily available, and if so, what is the approximate cost?

5. Are there any airlines that fly direct from New York to Prague? Seems like everything I’m finding has a connection.

6. Any other tips, must sees, or advice is appreciated.

Thank you!!

|||

Cant answer all your questions but here are the ones I can.

2. Depends on your budget. New town has a lot of nice reasonable hotels/hostels as well, is quieter, and its an easy walk or metro ride away.

3. There%26#39;s lots to do in Prague, 3 days is ok - better than 1 or 2 days. You can probably do more research and decide what time frame is best suited to your interestes.

5. I took Czech Airlines which flies nonstop from JFK. Daily flight leaves 1610pm and arrives in Prague around 6am.

Other tips - sample all the local beers that you can! Also, learning a few basic phrases in Czech will come in handy.

|||

early october is warmer than late october. as said above, let us know what kind of hotel, facilities, price you want and then we can give you recommendations. we could recommend the four seasons with its wonderful location, but the price for one night may be more than your budget for 3 days.

3 days you can see a lot of prague. the best way from prague to vienna is by train. there is also one direct train per day from prague to salzburg. consider spending one night in cesky krumlov between prague and salzburg. it is a magical place and worth it

|||

I found (lasy September) that 3/4 days is enough in Prauge, it%26#39;s a beautiful city and you can catch reasonable rated walking tours under the famous clock! Just beware alot of them overlap information wise, I think the one with half walking/half boatride was good. Go trek up to the Castle!

We stayed in apartments on the main street/square and it was a bit noisy (Prauge is FULL of stag parties) as we overlooked the street. Don%26#39;t be too alarmed by things you%26#39;ll see, I found it very safe and it has two different sides. The food is great and very affordable.

We got a flight with Smartwings from Paris, they were small but perfectly good, they even fed us on the plane, a rare thing on lowcost european carriers!

|||

Thanks everyone for the advice so far. Our planning was put on hold for a little while, but everything is now back on track!

What is the best place to stay for a budget of under $125/night? ($100/night is even better).

We%26#39;d like our own bathroom, and would like to be in a location with easy access to the sights.

Thanks in advance!

|||

you do not say when you are coming to prague as prices vary considerably between busy and off seasons. $125 or $100 does not buy you too much with the dollar exchange rate these days, especially for hotels in the centre

the ibis prague wenceslas square and ibis smichov are modern hotels but are next to metro / tram stations which can take you into the city centre in 15 minutes

|||

We are looking to go in October.. sometime between October 4th and Oct 23rd. We are open to Bed %26amp; Breakfasts as well as hotels..

Prefer quaint/charming over institutional..(although who doesn%26#39;t I suppose!). I stayed at an IBIS in Paris a few years ago and didn%26#39;t like it - not sure if they%26#39;re all the same?

Thanks!

|||

try something like the red chair pension which is in the centre and has fairly decent reviews on this site.

or go to sites like www.pragueexperience.com or to www.travelcook.com who have large hotel selections

Prague Apartment

Five Texans are making their first trip to Prague for the last week in September. Finding an adequate hotel was difficult so we decided to rent an apartment. We found a 3 bedrm/2 bath apt in Old Town, Rybna 4, and booked through %26quot;Prague Experience%26quot;. Has anyone stayed in this area or apartments? We hope that we have made a good decision and are looking forward to our stay in Prague.

We are in Prague for 7 nights and will appreciate any tips of things to see and do, places to eat, must do day trips, what can be missed, and etc.

Thanks in advance.

I really was hoping to get some feedback on my questions from this forum. Especially from some of the so called %26quot;experts%26quot;. Oh well!

|||

We stayed at the Marriott. Very close to the center. Don%26#39;t know they area you will be staying at but can recommend two things. Go out after dinner one night to Bombay bar. Have dinner one night at Arzenal. It is a gallery and restaurant in one. N-Joy your trip!

|||

the area is good, near to old town and wenceslas square, plenty of good restaurants and bars around, 24 hour public transport nearby....

|||

We, the so called %26quot;experts%26quot; are not online all the time. For general info check out Sovas web page www.livingprague.com. Another so called %26quot;expert%26quot; ;-)))

|||

I post in various TA forums for where I live, have lived or visit regularly. Anyone with the title %26#39;Local Expert%26#39; has willingly accepted the role of offering advice and tips on their city, in whatever free time they have, for no renumeration other than a desire to be helpful and share their knowledge.

I know a few Local Experts and it%26#39;s a time consuming business and they cannot be available 24 hrs a day.

TIP: Newbies to forums often miss the excellent Search facility within each forum. Putting any of your requests for things to see, must see/do%26#39;s, restaurants, day trips etc would have pulled up many useful threads with the info you require while you waited for other responses.

2nd TIP: Be sepcific in your requests. A thread with %26#39;Prague Apartment%26#39; as a header does not give those reading it any idea of whether you are, say, looking for an apt or wanting feedback on a particular apt. Nor would it alert them to the other info you requested in the body of the message.

There are many things to see and do in Prague if you can highlight what it is you enjoy doing, what kind of cuisine you prefer/want to try you will get more useful responses. Someone with no info on apartments may not bother to read a thread saying %26#39;Prague Apts%26#39; but they could be a gourmet with great restaurant recommendations!

|||

FJK Austin. Think you need to be a little patient with your requests. you post on a saturday evening local prague time and then moan that you don%26#39;t have a reply by sunday evening local time. maybe all the prague local experts are off enjoying the weekend with their families.

prague experience is well known. rybna is in the city centre and walking distance to most places and round the corner from many good restaurants and bars. the apartments themselves look very well presented. the only thing to say is that in the summer the apartments in the roof are very hot and can be very cold in the winter

|||

I apologize for my impatience and I do realize that my post was rather vague.

We are all very excited about visiting Prague and realize that we can%26#39;t see is all in 7 day but hope to do our best. We found the apartment and it seems to fit the bill but none of us have ever used an apartment in our travels. I hope we are not making a mistake as we have arranged for another Apartment in Amsterdam the following week.

I am of Czech heritage, great great grandparents on both sides came from Central Bohemia and Moravia, and I am excited about experienceing my Czech roots. I can remember my grandmother speaking to my great grandmother in Czech when she didn%26#39;t want anyone to understand.

Any tips that can be provided about Prague and the Czech Republic will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

|||

I have still have that

*I can remember my grandmother speaking to my great grandmother in Czech when she didn%26#39;t want anyone to understand.*

with my Mother speaking to me in French!

I took a look at your apartment and it certainly looks fine and the location means you will be able to walk to most places. I was in Prague in June with a group of friends and we only ever got the tram to get to and from our apt at the beginning/iend of each day. I hope you will post back what you thought of the apt.

I have rented vacation apartments all over the USA/Canada and Europe and much prefer this as an accommodation option. I suggest you go into the London, UK forum and check our sticky for Apartment Rentals to save me re-listing here the various points to note.

We ate here a couple of times, it%26#39;s just off the square.

which I can recommend if you want Italian food or a good salad. Once there you can pick up their card which lists some of their other restauarants. We went to one of the other branches over the river which was also good, more French inspired cuisine here. When I can pull out the info I might be able to post more useful location info on this! I%26#39;m sure if you do a search in this forum for Czech food recommendations you should find something.

The area over the Charles Bridge and down to the left and walking the direction of the river we found delightfully peaceful and pleasant. We came across the John Lennon Wall in the Mala Strana and the cafe behind the wall has a garden which is a lovely place to sit for awhile and enjoy a coffee, mint tea or cocktail. It%26#39;s not that it%26#39;s particularly beautiful - mainly overgrown grass - but a nice atmosphere.

The Jewish area and it%26#39;s synagogues is worth visiting but find something uplifting to do afterwards as it can be harrowing too.

The Kafka Museum was also interesting (very amusing sculpture outside) but also a little dark mood wise. Hardly surprising I suppose. Nice cafe to sit and rest in the courtyard outside. If you go to the Alphonse Mucha Museum you can get entry tickets for both and save a little. You can go on different days to the two museums if you take this option.

Every church seems to offer concerts and you will need to use some caution here as we went to one that managed to murder some beloved pieces! I%26#39;ve never seen so many people wincing at once. I will try and check which one this was so you can avoid it. Two of our party did manage a wonderful one.

Many people here seem to head to Český Krumlov from Prague. I would search the forum for some more info on this

Hope that gives you something to be going on with your plans for Prague.

Sorry me again! The first restaurant mentioned in the blog, Café Savoy, is the place I couldn%26#39;t remember the name of in my post that is French inspired. Seems I was right about it!

Length of stay in Prague

I%26#39;m spending 6 1/2 days in prague. Is that too long? i know i can do a couple of day trips. after staying in prague i%26#39;m heading down to cesky krumlov for 2 days. should i cut the prague portion down? maybe split it with plzen? my wife and i are pretty active tourist but some days we just like to chill and not do a whole lot.

|||

oh by the way, we plan on heading down to salzburg for 2 days and then over to vienna for another 6 days where one day is set aside for a day trip to bratislava. we like to see a lot but also if we find something we like to do, we%26#39;ll do it more than once. hence the reason for so much time in each city. with all this time, is there something we are missing between the two countries we should fit in?

|||

I always say this - I lived in Prague for 2½ years and I still didn%26#39;t get to see everything.

1 day for castle area + Strahov

1 day for old town + Charles Bridge.

1 day for Josefov, jewish museums + a short rivier boat trip.

1 day for Mala Strana + funicular up to Petrin Hill.

Then choose from

Day trip to Karlstejn castle

Day trip to Kutna Hora

Day at one of the national galleries - I like Veletrzni %26quot;palace%26quot;, but various types of art in different locations see www.ngprague.cz

Day at Vysehrad castle area + walk through Vinohrady.

Another day in Old Town and New Town (nove mesto) area, you really can just spend days wandering round here.

|||

We spent four days in Prague last summer and had a wonderful time. Six days in Prague sounds like enough time to explore the city and also give you some %26quot;chill%26quot; time. I can%26#39;t comment on Pilzen since we didn%26#39;t visit there. You won%26#39;t need more than one overnight stay in Cesky Krumlov since it is small but I would definitely include it. Also, I am glad you included Salzburg because that is defintely a must-see. Have a great time.

|||

I was there for 30 days in July and still didn%26#39;t see everything!! Check out the trip report that I posted last week under adnil1962.

|||

I think you have it about right.is there a particular reason for visiting Plzen?(ie the brewery) as it%26#39;s a pretty industrial town but easily reached on a day trip from Prague.

kutna Hora is another lovely little town for a day trip that is only an hour in the train from the city. Karstiejn castle can be reached in 30-40 minutes from Prague.

|||

thanks for all the feedback. seems like timing is about right. as for visiting plzen, yeah it was basically for the brewery. it%26#39;s not a must see. i think that day can be better used in prague or kutna hora.

|||

tydeee,the brewery is great and about a 5-7 minute walk from the train station ( takes about 90 minutes from Prague).I have been there 3 times now and will go back again,they have built a new visitor center and recently have included the new bottling hall in the tour ,they were in the process of opening up the old brewing areas for visitors when i was there in May and hopefully that will be opened soon if not already.there is a great resturant there as well.

lots of good bars in the town http://www.classiccitybrew.com/pilsen.html

as well as a very nice cathedral.

if you want specific details of how to get there just ask.

BTW my avatar is a picture of me being poured a beer from the great barrels in the brewery cellars,you will never taste it,s like anywhere else ,absolutly sublime.

|||

i would stay one night between prague and salzburg in cesky krumlov. there are trains with a change at ceske budejovice (you can visit here instead of plzen to see the original budweiser) and there is a bus shuttle from cesky krumlov to linz station from where it is easy to take the train to salzburg.

bratislava from vienna is easily able to be made in a day trip. the twin city liner hydrofoil is more expensive than the train but the journey by river is much better

|||

unclegus, you just put plzen back into the intinerary. maybe a day trip is worth the visit. again, thanks for the feedback guys.

|||

Two days in Salzburg is more then enough, you could reduce time there and still feel like you got the most out of it. It%26#39;s a nice little town. If you want down time take it in Prague or Vienna. You will have more options on what to do or where not to do it. Vienna is amazing and I can%26#39;t say enough about the Schonbrun Palace. If I was to go back I would spend a whole week in Prague and Vienna.

hotel slavia???

staying here for five nights in July and wonder if internet is available in the hotel, not getting any reply to my emails unfortunately but would like to take my laptop and be able to work from my room!

Otherwise, are there wifi enabled coffee shops around?

|||

As far as I know the Slavia does not have WiFi, but there are several coffee shops with free facilities, the nicest of which is the cafe/bar at the very top of the %26#39;Dum panu z lipe%26#39; shopping centre on namesti svobody. This post is too late for you, I know, but maybe someone else might be reading it...

Distance to Charles Bridge

I will be staying at the Hotel Grand Praha right in the Old town square and was wondering how far a walk is it to Charles Bridge?

How long does it also take to stroll across the bridge at normal pace?

Is it also a safe walk at night for a single female traveller

thank you

|||

about a 5-7 minute walk to the Bridge.it takes a few minutes to stroll across without stopping,but I don%26#39;t think I have ever done it in less than 10 minutes,there are several stalls selling things,artists painting and buskers of various sorts,last time i was there a Blind girl was singing operatic arias, and a jazz band playing further up.Some great views from the bridge and there is a bridge tower you can climb which gives some stunning views ( cost about 50czk).If you go to my profile and look at my photos of Prague there is one from the bridge tower. It is a safe area and at night ususlly quite busy.

|||

prague is safe to walk at night as a single female traveler. crossing the charles bridge at night and seeing the night panorama is one of the must do%26#39;s when visiting prague

Thinking of visiting Prague but need to convince hubby !!!!!

Hello everyone,

I would love to go to Prague for our wedding anniversary in December. Trouble is hubby not so keen.

If I can convince him it will be cheaper than a break in the UK then I might just win him over.

How much are flights from the UK and hotels.? Why is the best place to look for a cheap deal?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

(PS: is there much of a language barrier)

Thank you x

|||

I paid less than £300 for a week in Prague in may this year staying in a 3 star hotel just outside the main city center.flwe from edinburgh with Jet 2 .com and booked my own hotel ( one i had stayed in before.

check what companies fly from your local airport,certainly where you live you have a few options within a short distance.

tell him beer is cheap there and very very good,band fortunately there is no Tetleys Bitter.

|||

prices of flights of course depend when you fly, what time / day you fly, where you fly from, how far in advance you book and who you fly with. from leeds, jet2.com and the same company flies from manchester as does bmibaby and czech airlines. thomsonfly.com flies from doncaster. for all the above, you should look at the relevant airline companies for the best deals; nowhere else

hotels can be had for as low as 50 pounds in some places, although if you want more comfort, you obviously need to pay more

in the tourist areas, everyone speaks english. if you speak slowly, you don%26#39;t need to understand any czech to have a good time

once over here, the cost of living (food, drink, meals etc. is less than half the price of the UK)

|||

Cheap Beer - we are halfway there !!!!

Thanks x

|||

and far far better beer than you get in england

|||

Another plus is that a lot of the booking companys offer free nights at this time of year.

Language barrier ,you will be put to shame when you realise how many locals speak english and good english at that.

TORII

Thomsonfly offers cheap fares from Doncaster and EasyJet from East Midlands. BMI Baby from Manchester and Birmingham. Czech Airlines from Manchester.

Should I buy a city pass?

Hi, me and my friend are planning to visit Prague in early Sept and will be staying for 6 full days. I read off a few travel tips that recomended purchasing a city pass that allows you free entry to most museums, discount offers at some hot spots for eatery %26amp; drinks, and some offer free 72 hr in city transportaion to ride the rails to get around. Has anyone ever purchased this and would it be usefull in savings?

|||

Hi,

We purchased the four day passes last month, not including transport.

On looking at what we would have spent on entry to the various places that we went to, the savings would have been minimal. Admission charges for most places are not expensive. We also found a little tied to the places covered by the pass, and so tended to organise our days around them, rather than %26quot;doing our own thing%26quot;. I don%26#39;t think we would bother again next time.

One thing I would say is that, while the pass itself is only limited to four days, we were only asked to produce it once; all other attractions were happy to just accept the coupon from the book that accompanies the pass. Thus, there is potential for the less scrupulous traveler to use the passes for more than four days!

Hope this helps.

|||

if you are talking about the prague card, i personally don%26#39;t think it is worth it. a 7 day public transport card only costs 280 crowns and with the prague card, you are almost forced to try to visit as many places on the card and eating at the places listed on the card so that you feel you get your money%26#39;s worth, as opposed to visiting places that really interest you.

entrance fees in prague if you do not have a prague card are not very expensive, as are restaurants if you go off the main tourist streets

Antique clocks

Has anyone found a good place to shop for antique clocks? I assume we%26#39;d have to go a few streets off the beaten path in order to get a better deal, but I think an antique made in such a historical place would be a wonderful thing to put in our home to remind us of Prague.

I%26#39;ve heard the names of the stores Antique-Andrle Vladimir and Galerie Peron as possible purveyors of Czech clocks.

Any suggestions?

|||

we bought two antique clocks from a good little antique shop on panska street just off the main shopping street, na prikope in the old town

|||

Thanks, Peb.

Is Na Prikope the name of the shop? It sounds like a place worth our checking into.

|||

Na prikope is the big pedestrian shopping street off Wenceslas Square. Not the shop name.

|||

Was the store name JHB Antiques? That%26#39;s the closest match I can find on the internet to the location you%26#39;re describing.

If so, we%26#39;ll try to get over there and check it out when we visit. Any other tips, or places, worth knowing about to find an antique time piece for a good deal, anyone?

|||

cannot remember the name. it is 100 yards up the street on the left hand side as you walk from na prikope street. has a sign simply saying %26quot;Antik%26quot; outside it

|||

This was about 8 years ago, but I bought an antique clock from one of the little shops on Golden Lane. It is one of my favorite souvenirs. I%26#39;ve had the clock appraised here in the States, so I know it is authentic and I did get a decent price.

I have no idea if the shop is still there, but might be worth a look.

|||

Thanks, guys! Thanks to you, I have some good leads. I look forward to following through on them, and hopefully even finding just the right clock.

|||

these days you need a licence to take certain antiques out of the country, but any reputable antique shop should be able to take care of the formalities
