Traditional Crafts

Hi there, we will be travelling to Prague in the very beginning of December of this year. I was curious if anyone knew of any shops/stores/markets that sell any traditional crafts, toys, liquor etc that Prague is known for. Whenever we travel we like to purchase/collect traditional things from the country/town we visit such as hand crafted wooden toys or something the country/town is either known for or just unique items. If anyone could recommend any places that they know of (locals) or that travellers have come across I would appreciate any feedback. Shipping costs are not an issue either as we always budget this into our trips.

thanks so much!

The Czech Republic is famous for glass. You will not be able to move for glass shops in old town and doing a search on the forum will give you the best ones.

You will see a lot of wooden toys. Whist these are common all over central europe they are certainly significantly cheaper in CZ than in Austria, Germany, Switzerland etc. The Havelska market (Havelske Trh) seems as good as anywhere - you will find it easily if you follow the crowds from Vaclaske Namesti to Old Town square. Wooden toys make great presents for young children - I bought my niece%26#39;s next 3 years birthday %26amp; christmas presents before I left!

Marionnettes are a traditional Czech toy, again you will see many places in the old town selling these. I%26#39;m not an expert on where is best of these.

There is a small chain called %26quot;Manufactura%26quot; with multiple shops over town, these sell good quality Czech handicrafts. The prices are slightly more than you would pay if you went elsewhere but the quality is more reassuring.

Finally Russian dolls are sold everywhere and were common to a lot of Slavic states, although I think there existance in CZ is largely due to the tourist trade. Many places sell them and shop around for good quality painting.
